beauty from darkness
Well what a fantastic album, more a musical journey and a beautiful blending of talents. Already my album of the year, nergaard has a warmth of tone that is at once full of charm and beauty.Time stands still as you lose yourself in this musical world where one haunting track leads into another.
credits must go to all the supporting players, from mike mcgurks wonderful and passionate lyrics to vince mendozas glorious arrangements for the opening and closing tracks, and for the producer for creating such a beautiful soundscape.
nergaard takes a chance this time on a album of all new and original material, the result is without doubt a milestone in this singers career.
Her best yet
Her last few album's were a mix of covers and original material and was found under the "jazz" section (although Silje's created started in pop). She's got a new band and the sound is a little fuller than in earlier albums. The result is a beautifully recorded CD of original love songs. The opener, arranged for harp and strings, is sheer gorgeousness. The title track is more uptempo with a furious drum riff in the background. "The Diner" is a relaxed ballad and should have been called "the way they seem to be". "Wastelands" is a darker tone, very atmospheric. "When Judy Falls" is a bright and breezy summer number with some nice doobee doos. The Beachcomber is a simple arrangement of a lovely dark ballad. "What Might Have Been" is just Silje and piano with a lovely chord sequence and a great chorus. "Aren't You cured yet?" has a great riff and builds brilliantly. "Who Goes there?" is possibly the highlight and a duet with Marcia Faraco who sounds a bit like Carlos Antonio Jobim. The song soars when the backing vocals take over and it's a classic tune. "Before you Called me Yours" is a bit of a departure being a country tune that would be perfect for Alison Krause. "How Are You Gonna Deal With It" is also a bit different for Silje, being a big band blues number. It doesn't really suit her smallvoice but adds some variety to the overall sound. "Let me Be troubled" has a long meandering intro but is fine once it starts.
It's not perfect - most tracks are too long and the solos meander on for too long without impressing. Mike McGurk's lyrics are again a mixture of superb and clunky.
Whilst this doesn't contain her best songs, this is by far the best collection of songs she has recorded so far and it sounds at times as though she may be heading back to the pop arena. So its a case of evolution rather than revolution. This album is a great collection of lovely tunes and is great for a romantic evening or for falling asleep to after a hard day, which is not necessarily a bad thing. Buy it. You won't be disappointed.
