Excellent value
Bought this to connect to a Sony LCD tv and Sony HDD recorder with built in freeview. Set up and calibration took about an hour but the instructions could be clearer(I mostly followed instructions from other peoples reviews). For all sound to be played throgh TV connect as follows:-
1. Connect the system to the TV with HDMi lead and scart cable to scart 2(this is normally the one that inputs and outputs).
2. Connect HDD/freeview to other scart. On TV settings change output source for scart 2 to `auto`. This will then output the sound of whatever is on the screen through the system
Once connected I tested with various films and music DVD's - Star Wars and Die Hard 4 particularly impressive!
Overall, a very good system for the price once you get the connections sorted.
Good value but lacking audio input
Bought for use with Sony 32D3000 TV using HDMI. Disappointed to find I needed to connect a separate audio stereo lead from TV audio ->DZ230 or connect the SCART lead in order to get audio from TV via the DZ230 - then only 2ch stereo possible. Come on Sony.
Units lacks a PCM (optical or coax audio input and decoder) OK its a lower end cinema system but this should be clearer in the info. and it means the HDMI is only used for video from DZ230 to TV and not for audio from TV to DZ230. Inconvenient to say the least.
Only "audio" input apart from SCART is front panel 3.5mm jack and makes connecting audio devices UGLY.
Apart from that, video playback is OK at 720p, theatre sync function is useful but overhyped , sound is clear, good bass, little hiss. DVD unit is noisy but performs OK. Good value for money but short on audio input support.
Connectivity
The DAV230 sounds great with action movies and I think is very good value for money. The manual is not the easiest to follow however. I have seen a number of comments re connectivity with this model, particularly lack of audio in. I sorted this by using the HDMI cable as the video source (between the DAV and TV) and then getting a switchable Pure scart to audio converter for £12 - plugged the scart end into the DAV and then right and left audi channel cables from the scart (DAV) end to the TV where I plugged the audio cables into audio out on the TV (Sony 3020). It now works a treat. I have been able to keep the two scarts I have on the TV for sky and my DVD recorder and use the HDMI/audio/Scart cable for the connectivity between the TV and DAV (If you only use the HDMI cable you will only get sound through the DAV when watching DVD's and not the TV). This allows me to play everything including the TV through the DAV and also pressing the Theatre button on the TV remote control switches the DAV on automatically!
