Philips - "you need to re-think this one"
I purchased this product because I have lived and breathe the great Philips brand name and all the great products that it traditionally stands for, for a few years now.
However on this occasion Philips - "you need to re-think this one before the product gives someone a serious injury or worse", let me explain.
The additional screen is an excellent design and has very good features however the mechanism that attaches the the screen(s) to the headrest is an accident waiting to happen, is totally unnacceptable.
The bracket that the screen is fitted to stands off the headrest about 4-6 inches further twoards the user (child) than conventional screens of this type. Therefore it is too close to the persons eyesight for one thing, especially in a small car. In addition the same bracket is rigid and i truly believe that if a person (child) was in an accident the sreen may break but you are left with a rigid bracket which effectively becomes a spike..........at head/throat height.
The product on the whole may be OK but the attaching bracket mechanism is potentially very dangerous and of very poor design. The vehicle i tried to use this contraption in was an Audi A4 saloon, the unit would be impossible to use in anything smaller. I took my system back to the retailer and got a full refund upon my safety statement. This product design should be re-designed in my opinion before it is released for use to the end user. Please bare in mind that 95% of these units that are used in motor hehicles are used to entertain children of all ages.
Yours Too Can be Multi-Region
Hey folks. First, this device is great. It has everything I want, including good headrest mounts and 3 seperate jacks for our kids headphones. The built-in speakers are good and plenty loud. And most importantly, it's easily switched to multi-region mode. As we are americans living in the UK with a mix of Region 1 & 2 DVDs, this was critical.
Here's how (thanks to R. Thorton for his review on Philips PET 720/05):
1. Switch the player on.
2. Press Setup on the remote control.
3. Move the menu selector down to Preferences and then press the Right arrow.
4. Press 2, 1, 2, 2, 2 and then 5.
5. Press Left arrow.
6. Press Down arrow.
7. The screen should then display Region Code. Press 0.
8. Press Setup on the remote again to exit.
And that's it. :)
A great gadget for long journeys
I frequently drive from England to the north of Scotland, a journey which can vary from 8 - 12 hours. My children are really well behaved but there are only so many kids songs and games of eye-spy one can play and stay sane so I have succumbed..... this helps to pass a couple of hours, and for £130 I am very happy.
The picture on the second screen is excellent. The picture on the primary device is a bit washed out, and there is some rattling noise from the dvd spinning. This presents no problem in the car, but might if it were to be used on the train. (though the rattling was not audible when headphones are being used.)
I have a Grand Scenic, and the screens are at a sensible viewing distance away for my children even with my 6'2" frame pushing the seat back.
Please note that the mounting system is delivered with some v. short bolts suitable only for headrests with a spindle diameter of about 10mm. Mine were slightly longer so I had to spend 64p at a hardware shop to buy 8 M4*25 bolts to mount the system.
As per other viewers comments there are wires everywhere but then that is a necessary evil. How else do you get power to the unit and send the signal to the second screen and power it unless you go out and spend £1000's on an integrated DVD system.
All in all great....and the children look forward to long journeys now. I look forward to when they can drive and I can watch the dvd in the back
