Customer Reviews

Samsung DVD R149/XEU3
I have had two examples of this recorder. The first one turned itself off at random when viewing a pre-recorded disc. It wouldn't record on ram disc using the timer. It would not format ram discs but kept coming up with 'System error is found', accompanied by a loud buzzing sound, after exactly 10% of the disc had been formatted. The machine locked up after this and had to be unplugged to reset it.

Hughes direct sent me a replacement. This had almost exactly the same faults. It didn't turn off as often as the first one. Their technical dept sent me a firmware update which did nothing except cause less loud buzzing when the formatting error came up after 10%.
I shall be contacting Hughes about this shortly. I have to say Hughes have been very easy to deal with and I am sure the matter will shortly be resolved.

Generally picture quality was good, better on the first machine I had but still good on both machines. Remote was good and had lots of easy to use features. It is just a pity about the randon switch off and the inability to timer record on ram disc. It will play ram discs made on my Panasonic recorder.

Nice player, shame about the recording...1
Okay, it's pretty cheap and you probably get what you pay for. I bought this to transfer some VHS tapes to DVD. Although the set up is straightforward and the manual is clear as to what you can and can't do, this machine is fairly limited. My main problem is that many of the recordings lose audio-sync after 25 minutes or so. I have to resolve this by copying the DVDs to the hard disk of my Mac and then demuxing/remuxing. Quite time consuming. The DVDs burned by this Samsung also lack an AUDIO_TS folder, which, I understand, is a given as far as DVD authoring is concerned.

Save your money and buy a better machine.

Very disappointing - don't bother.1
Could not cope with dvd-ram discs (same problems as other reviewers). Progressive scan feature resulted in sound but no picture. Froze several times, I had to unplug it to re-set. It was cheap but I thought Samsung were fairly reputable and now I wish I hadn't bothered. Returned within a week for a refund.
