Album Description
Carla Bruni may be best known as the face that graced a thousand magazine
covers, or the romantic companion to the rich and famous, but the Bruni bow
has many strings. Born in Italy, raised in France, her aristocratic
upbringing might have inspired lethargy in others, but Carla's life as a
supermodel has given way to that of a chanteuse. Her debut album ,
`Quelqu'un m'a dit', sold an astonishing 2 million copies worldwide; a
collection of self-penned songs in breathy, earthy Italian and French.
Her new release, `No Promises', is a quietly triumphant gem; an album that
celebrates the lyricism of a round table's worth of English language poets
in eleven songs that highlight the exemplary musicianship and creative
vision of Bruni and her producer/collaborator, ex-Telephone guitarist Louis
Bertignac. From the harmonica-fuelled interpretation of WB Yeat's `These
Dancing Days Are Gone' (`I carry the sun in a golden cup/the moon in a
silver bag' runs the beautifully annunciated refrain) to the chiaroscuro
take on W.H Auden's `Lady Weeping At The Crossroads' and the rocking
version of Emily Dickinson's `I Felt My Life With Both Hands', one feels
that all the poets involved - male or female, American or British, 19th or
20th Century - would have granted Bruni their blessing.
Customer Reviews
Interesting and nice to listen to
As another reviewer states, do not be put off by the concept of this. After all, what are some songs anyway if not poetry set to music. Being poems by some of the greatest poets, you then have beautiful sounding music and great lyrics ! This is good to listen with headphones while travelling. I have had no trouble hearing every word.
Hearing her sing in English is just as sultry as in French. I liked her first album more but this is as well produced.
Fascinating collection .
A hypnotic environment of word and sound which provides a delightful excuse to investigate the work of the poets included....but I needed the scripts the first time round although the French accent and mysterious dropping of plural's' was lispingly attractive.Well worth a listen and all that the poetry demands.
Huge Disappointment
I loved Quelqu'un m'a dit so much even though I dont speak french that I was really excited about the release of an english lanquage album, but here lies the problem. Carla Bruni cannot speak english! While the music is pleasant enough, I had to keep reading the lyrics to find out what she is singing. I really wanted/expected to love this album but english does not suit her voice. If you havn't heard the previous album check it out, it's superb - if you want french vocalists singing in english try Keren-Ann, she does it far better!
