The first clue to the sound of Avril Lavigne's third CD, The Best Damn Thing, comes in the form of her kickoff single, "Girlfriend," which is filled with singing, clapping, and cheerleader-style chanting. The song is quite a sonic contrast to her previous disc, Under My Skin, which was considered to be Lavigne's more mature follow-up to her 16 million-selling debut CD, Let Go. Like that debut, The Best Damn Thing will be largely and deeply embraced by teenage girls, and is packed with songs that will create enthusiastic sing-alongs in concert. There are a handful of numbers that will appeal to a wider audience; "Innocence" and disc closer "Keep Holding On" would both fit perfectly in a Gray's Anatomy episode, while the sultry message and solid harmonies in "Hot" will appease ears of many ages. Lavigne's husband, Sum 41 frontman Deryk Whibley makes an appearance as producer and instrumentalist on a handful of tracks; their union, however, seems to have bred more than love. "I Don't Have to Try" and "Everything Back But You" both have a frenetic pace and chorus that is so eerily Sum-like that if they weren't married, a copyright lawsuit might ensue. That aside, the record oscillates between lyrically acerbic fare ("One of Those Girls," "I Can Do Better") and fluffy sugar-pop melodies ("Contagious," "The Best Damn Thing") delivering far more spunk rock than punk rock. --Denise Sheppard

Av's Back!
Ok, the first two albums are better than this, but this is still a great album to listen too! I have listened to it quite a few times now since I bought it on release and it has grown on me even more. There are some songs on here that do sound different from what she has done on the previous two albums, and like one reviewer said, there is maybe a little Sum 41 sound like in one or two, but there are some big tunes on here that sound great and similar to her old stuff. When your gone, best damn thing, hot, runaway, keep holding on, innocense and everything back but you are all great songs. This album is very good and I know some people have gave it 1 and 2 out of 5 stars because shes changed her style on this album, but I feel shes only changed a little bit but the album is still decent to listen to and it is Avril Lavigne! Some people got to learn that one or two songs that are different doesn't mean its a bad album, but in my opinion there isn't a bad song on it, but there is one or two that are different from what she has done and isn't as good as the previous albums or the songs I mentioned earlier on the album, but its still a good album and there should be a few more number ones for her if she releases the songs that are stated above in this review because they are very good songs to listen to! She is a great singer and has many talents. Please be aware that there are two versions of the ablum, one that has no swearing in it, and one that allows swearing, which is this album. But this is stil a 5 out of 5 star album because like I have said, there is some very good songs on here that will grow on you too! Go buy!

Another Great Album
I bought this album recently and I now own all three albums by Avril Lavigne which I think are all exceptionally good albums by one of my favourite artists whose music I have liked since 2002. If I could meet Avril Lavigne in person I would congratulate her on the successful career that she has had because it is obvious that she has put a lot of hard work and dedication into her music and I look forward to her next album which I will certainly be purchasing.

1.Girlfriend 10/10 (NEVER SKIP)
A brilliant opening track which really get you in the avril mood. Fantastic cheerleader chants, guitar and lyrics

2.I can do better 10/10 (NEVER SKIP)
One of mine and her favuraite songs. Full of attitude and the guitars are so cool in the back. Never skip this coz this is one of the strongest, most cool songs on the album

3.Runaway (10/10) (never skip)
Fantastic sing along song with feel good freak lyrics you can not help singing this song!!!

4.The best Damn thing 10/10 (NEVER SKIP)
I now know why the album is called the best damn thing and its because the song is freakishly catchy and amazing cheerleader raps for the verses, and finally the first clean song on the record!!!

5.When your gone 10/10 NEVER SKIP
A beautiful ballad which really calms you down and brings a weepy tear in your eye!!

6. Everything back but you 10/10 NEVER SKIP
An sharp song full of aggressiveness and sly bitchiness, but a fantastic rock song, you will never want to skip it and also you cant stop bloody singing it!!!

7.Hot 10/10 (u may wanna skip this track)
Hot is a very sexy song full of saucy hardcore lyrics!! So catchy BEWARE!!
You may only wanna skip this track because it may be a bit annoying for some, by its cheesy lyrics!!

8.Innocence 10/10 NEVER, NEVER SKIP!!
A magical ballad full of crazy strings and it really gets you looking down memory lane. the first time you listen to it you may not get it but you will eventually!!

9. I dont have to try 10/10 (U may wanna skip)
A very in-your-face bratty, ignorant song with very strong language!!
But a amazing catchy cocky song!!! ONE OF THE BEST, You may only wanna skip coz of the language

10. One of those girls!! 10/10 NEVER SKIP
A bit like my happy ending but still an addictive song!!!

11.Contagious 9/10!! NEVER SKIP
Brilliant teen rock love song, its the only track with 9 out of 10 because it is only 2:08 miniutes long!!!

12.Keep Holding on 10/10 NEVER SKIP
A lovely supportive song which was the soundtrack for Eragon the movie!!
You may cry!!

And of course its got a brilliant 50 mins dvd worth the buy, and a word boklet!!
