good piece of kit but
We brought this product when it first came out and we did not realise that there is a design fault on it.
When you use this product and you keep lifting up the screen and putting it down, the screen will start to rub on the 'Push here to close button which is protruding over the unit ever so slightly. We took it back to a Sony recommended service agent and they mentioned someone else had brought in the same model with the same condition. They fitted a new screen and recommended us to place a layer of soft material in-between the screen and the unit, which for saying we brought this product for nearly £200.00 is appalling.
So save yourself a lot of money and head my warning, if it doesn't happen now to your screen it will.
Don't buy, unless you have money to burn!
Woeful sound but excellent in all other regards!
I recently bought this Sony DVD player after having looked at most of the competing models available. I think there are several points which recommend this over other players
Firstly the build quality is top notch with a nice rotating screen.
Secondly The screen resolution is now excellent on this latest sony model with 800x480 pixels which is over 4 times the resolution of most other models on the market. The resolution is very similar to watching DVDs on a conventional TV. I had initially bought a Philips model but its resolution was very poor (think pirated VHS tape quality). I was unable to read even opening film credits it was that bad. I therefore returned the Philips and bought this.
Thirdly the battery life is very good at a stated 6.5 hrs. Sony do say in the small print that this is only if you use it with earphones and on low level brightness. However I have certainly acheived 4 to 5 hrs on normal brightness with earphones. The battery is incidentally Lithium Ion not the cheaper NiMg batteries you get on other players and fits discetely on the bottom of the player.
So are there any downs? Well the big one is sound which really is very poor. It is certainly not loud enough to watch it on a plane or in a car unless you use earphones which is what I suspect it is really designed for. To this end it has 2 earphone jacks. It also comes with conventional and car chargers as well as a carry case and remote. You can also use it as a DVD player if you go away by plugging it into a TV with the video/audio outputs (which is the only time you really need the remote).
In summary an excellent quality player with beautiful screen resolution but you will have to buy earphones!
Sony DVPFX850B Portable DVD Player
This unit has the build quality you would expect from Sony, and it feels like a serious piece of kit. The screen is one of the best available with its 800 x 480 pixel resolution. I would estimate the useful viewing angle to be around 90 degrees. The battery clips on at the bottom of the player, and is not required if plugged in via the mains adapter or via the car plug. It also has a "video in" socket so you can use it as a monitor. The USB connection can be used to access thumb drives, but only JPG and MP3 files can be played from it. It will not play movie files from the USB port. There is an optical-out audio link, but Sony did not provide the cable for that. The accessories that are included: Remote control, AC power adaptor, 12 V car cigarette lighter adaptor, and stereo audio and composite video cable, and carry bag. Sadly, there is no s-video or component video output on the player. A waste of the 12 bit video DAC in my opinion. The sound from the inbuilt speakers is barely acceptable, and you will need to provide and use your own headphones or external speakers. There are 2 headphone sockets so you can listen with someone else. The carry bag feels cheap and tacky. It almost feels wrong to put such a nice player in it! Mine was a tight fit. They should have made a better felt-lined bag.
Even with it's faults, this is still one of the best disk spinners out there, primarily thanks to its awesome screen.
PROS: Swivel screen transforms from "laptop" mode to "tablet" mode.
800 x 480 screen is amazingly clear.
Good build quality.
CONS: As with most portable DVD players, not all content is presented in full screen. Unless it is 16:9, it will display in "black box" with black bars all around. 4:3 content displays with black bars on either side. High price.
