Video game adaptations of big movies, particularly kid’s movies, tend to get a lot of flak from more hardcore gamers – and not without some justification. Not offering anything original in terms of gameplay is one thing but they’re usually quite shoddily made and with little real connection to the movie they’re supposed to be based on. Shrek The Third won’t be winning any video game awards for innovation but it does at least look and sound like the film and is unlikely to disappoint anyone who simply wants to relive it from the comfort of their own joypad.
In predictable fashion the game is a third person action adventure in which you get to control Shrek, Donkey, Puss in Boots, Princess Fiona, Arthur and Sleeping Beauty. Each has their own subtle differences, from Puss n’ Boot’s double jump to Sleeping Beauty’s guide ability, but combat always comes down to just mashing the attack button as rapidly as possible. Everyone also has their own special move as well, from Fiona’s flying kick to Puss n’ Boot’s "cute puss" move.
Another inevitable aspect of the game is a series of mini-games, but most are actually quite good, particularly Castle Capture where you have to smash down an opponent’s walls and Ships Ahoy where you have to defend a beach from invading pirates. All can be played with a friend outside the game, which is more than can be said of the main story mode which is sadly single player only. The graphics are decent though and everyone looks like their movie selves, even if the celebrity impersonators don’t sound like them. As a video game it’s a fairly average affair all round, but as a marketing tie-in it succeeds with flying colours.

Manufacturer's Description
In Shrek the Third, players adventure as Shrek and his friends to save Far Far Away in a hilariously twisted fairy tale from the movie and beyond. Fans play as their favourite heroes from the film: Shrek, Donkey, Puss-in-Boots, Fiona, Fiona's rebellious cousin Arthur and her fellow fairy tale heroine Sleeping Beauty. The game takes players on an epic journey through the worlds of Far Far Away after Prince Charming storms the city with an army of villains in order to seize the throne. Players are challenged to rescue pals, face off against Charming's henchmen, gather collectibles, test their gaming skills in numerous boss fights and engage in various single-player and multiplayer mini-games.

Great Fun
This is a very good young childrens playstation game. The gameplay develops like a complete story with lots of Shrek humour throughout the 20 levels. It largely follows the plot of Shrek 3. You are made to play as different characters: Shrek, Donkey, Puss in Boots, Fiona, Arthur and Sleeping Beauty each with their own unique fighting styles and special moves. The gameplay isn't very challenging which means it will probably be too easy for teenagers. There are a couple of tricky bits which may get young children stuck but largely a few simple button clicks will get your character past the enemy or over an obstacle. If you do die you are not sent back very far, you just try and try again. Only if you give up in the middle of a level and turn the playstation off do you have to start from the beginning of a section again. Evil trees, witches, soldiers, gnomes, wicked pinocchios, a huge Ice Dragon, a piano playing Captain Hook and Prince Charming are some of the villians you have to defeat.
There are also some very good multiplayer or single player mini games which extend the gameplay of this disk like Frog Herding.
The main game if you rush through it is very short. You could get to the end in a couple of days. You can extend the gameplay by completing all the quests in the level but my children don't like hanging around or going backwards. I think the game would have been better if you were forced to complete most tasks before progressing. The quests are tasks like collecting an amount of hidden items like tiaras, red apples, tankards etc which can be lying around or hidden in crates, bushes etc. Another common quest is to perform a set number of special finishing moves when defeating a villian.
Throughout the game you can collect special money coins everywhere and there is a shop where you can purchase special outfits which make the characters look silly but also give them extra powers.
Overall it's very good and highly recommended. It could have just done with a few more levels.
This review is by my 7 year old daughter!
I'm typing the words here but the following is what my 7-year-old daughter had to say about Shrek the Third:-
"I liked it a lot and it was fun, I could play it all day and the next day. It's funny and I liked it that I could play lots of different characters, my favourites were Shrek and Sleeping Beauty. I liked collecting all the gold coins. It was a hard game but it's the best one out of all the games I've got."
This isn't really a game for adults or even teenagers, who will expect more in terms of challenges and variety. But for children under (say) 12 it's probably a game to recommend although I must admit I found the levels of violence perhaps unsuitable for very young children. Personally I would have given it 3 stars - which equates to 'good' in my opinion - but my daughter insisted that she wanted to give it a perfect 5!
Short but Sweet
Overall this game took me about 7 hours to complete, which is a very short time for completing video games. Sadly it has lost its good two player story mode from Shrek 2 and is not as complex, with no ability to switch characters during the levels. It is mainly fighting and unless you are utterly surrounded by enemies or fighting a very strong opponent you can easily win a fight by constantly pressing on the attack button. The mini games are good and for fans wanting to relive the film on their Playstation you won't find better, however if you want an ultimate gaming experience you won't find it here. This game is best for under 12s. It is fun to play but not long enough for a four star rating.
