Not the quickest but very easy to set up
This was a last minte decision to purchase and for the price is an excellent buy.
Working with a mixed XP/Vista connected SOHO network this device attached through a switch connected to a modem router without fuss and was seen by the system immediately.
Was able to map the drive easily and able to add extra "shares" without fuss through the supplied software.
I note form a previous userr the comments regarding the NTFS formatting issue with this machine but in my case I have no need to use the extra file sizr that this format allows - I am not storing Media files on this drive as I have a Buffalo Live station for this purpose and wanted this to be my home based business prime back up.
The whole process form unpacking the unit and getting it wokring was less thann 10 minutes and as the unit is Vista capable through its software was a toital breeze.
This is not a fast drive but it carries a reliable Samsung HDD and was exactly what I needed.
Only 4 stars as this could be a quicker unit and it is quiet BUT this is because it does not have a fan to assist cooling and it does get warm - very attractive but mine will be hidden away in a ventilated cabinet so its pretty blue lights and activity noise will be of no interest!
Recommended if you need a solid FAT32 file back up system in a home or SOHO network using Vista - others can be a pain.
NTFS not working on LAN !!
Be very careful when buying this device!!
By default the device is formated FAT32, so you have a 476GB FAT32 partition. You can access NOW this partion via USB or LAN.
If you plan to store files bigger then 4GB on FAT32 it will not work(due to FAT32 limitation),so you will have to convert/format the HDD to NTFS.
The NTFS partition(s) CAN'T be accessed via LAN, ONLY via USB !!
If you create 2 partition (1 NTFS, 1 FAT32) you have the same problem, via LAN you are only able to see FAT32 partition.
So.. USB works with FAT32 and NTFS.
LAN works ONLY with FAT32.
Had i known that i wouldn't pay extra for the LAN option, i would have bought only a USB device (much cheaper!).
Make sure you take the right decision when buying this device.
Great drive - simple and well made
I couldn't find any other network attached drive for a similar price. I was looking for something to back my PC up to and have hidden this away in a cupboard attached to a Zytel 'home plug' unit to provide the network. The unit is nicely made and quiet and comes with everything you need including network and USB leads.
The bundled backup software seems pretty good and can be set to backup files as soon as they've been created/changed. It can also save multiple revisions of files. Since the file backup is just a copy of the files it's simple to retrieve them and you can of course just plug the drive into any computer with the USB lead.
I didn't have any problem setting it up on the network, it obtained an IP address that the bundled software then finds. Web interface allows changes of IP address and setting up of shares. There's not any security on the shares, which is a shame, but not really an issue for my purposes. It can also act as an FTP server (where you can configure users), but I haven't tried this.
Overall, very happy with it.
