Amazon.co.uk Review
What’s that coming over the hill? It’s a band with all the primary colour and frivolity of their ill-fitting, novelty name-tag (for those loyal to the other channel, Mumm-Ra was the undead ever-living nemesis of cartoon mutants the Thundercats), that’s what. Fresh-faced to the core and melodically virginal, they might shake their fists like harder-shelled japesters The Automatic, but channel their not inconsequential enthusiasm into the moisturised mainstream skin of bands like Feeder and Snow Patrol. They cut an interesting figure even if their ambition never quite solidifies into the vast shapes it wants to. The meek vocals are pushed to their limits and endear through their eagerness, evoking Richard Archer from Hard-Fi without the hangover or the wide-eyed folly of a pre-broadsheet Damon Albarn. "Song B", in a clear reference to Blur’s most explosive moment, and "Out of the Question", rattling along like a mockney Wannadies, have them trying to flex their muscle, though they find more comfortable success with skinny-fit melodies of "She’s Got You High" and "What Would Steve Do?", carried through on a light breeze. They mine the vaults of late-90s fringe Britpop, bands like Ooberman and The Supernaturals, and like them they throw enough paint up at the speaker to keep things colourful at the very least. - - James Berry
NME
`Faced with The View, The Automatic, The Horrors and a whole rave
tour, this bunch came out on top'. `On the stage, no-one could match
Mumm-Ra. Fact'
NME
`The band have honed their live act into a masterclass in
eccentric British indie, and recorded a debut album that mashes The
Killers, The Beach Boys and smart English quirks'.

Brilliant first album
Having seen a couple of Mumm-Ra gigs over the last 6 months or so I was worried that the energy exuded on stage wouldn't be recreated in the recordings. Wrong!! A well mastered and produced album that had me enthusiastically tapping away to all the tracks at first listen. From the slow and gentle ease into the opening Now Or Never, it's not long before the tempo reaches an absorbing and very melodic cruise; with the odd moment of haunting soft vocal and accoustic guitar thrown in also. Out Of The Question is clearly the pinnacle - it has to be rereleased as a single, surely. Commercial, a bit, maybe; but individual and creative also. I love it and so does the wife and young kids (very rare to have agreement on what to play in the car). I genuinely can't believe that this can come from ones so young - well they all look about sixteen anyway!!
One Outstanding Debut
For someone who rarely reviews on amazon but always reads what other people think i thought Mumm-ra would be a good place to start. Theyre debut album has got me hooked. Theyre style, in their own words, fused the lush beauty of The Beach Boys via the pastoral quirks of The Kinks to the outer limits reached by The Beta Band and Sigur Ros. In one word its a classic.
'Shes got you high', NME's song of the week (10/05/07) stands out as one of those hits that will be playing all over the radio come summer and its the perfect song for when the suns going down. 'Out of the question', one of my personal favourites, is much more upbeat and although shamelessly catchy its one you'll find yourself loving after just a few listens.
I had the pleasure of seeing these guys at their recent string of gigs and can't praise them enough. Hopefully they'll be hitting the festival circuit this year and will get to see them again soon.
Buy this album, you won't regret it!
Top class
These lot look too young even to be out of school, but they've impressed me every time I have an encounter. Saw them for the 1st time last year in Reading and they were one of the stand out bands of the weekend for me. Half hour set to a packed out tent. So glad I saw them - All thanks to that curious band name... Its been like far too long since then for this album!! Its actually done my head in waiting for this 1.
Packed full of smart hooks, top tracks and quirkiness, I'd love them to do a Kaiser chiefs.
Very surprised they left out - "when the lights go out" (Out of the question b-side) - An acoustic track that shows off Noo's skills as a songwriter so well its crazy. (at least I think its Noo that writes) Either way this band is way talented.
Saw them live again in Bristol Thekla about 2 weeks ago and they were still on form; And I think the single "she's got you high" has been used by HSBC for an advert (a low key affair) if that's not a thumbs up by "the man" then hey...
I hope this band gets the recognition they deserve.
Highly recommended.
(I wish you well Mumm-Ra)
