Amazon.co.uk Review
A major British hit, a lorryload of laughs and some sparkling action? We’ll have some of that. It’s fair to say that Hot Fuzz proves that Simon Pegg and Edgar Wright’s brilliant Shaun Of The Dead was no one-off, serving up a superbly crafted British homage to the Hollywood action movie.
Deliberately set in the midst of a sleepy, quaint English village of Sandford, Pegg’s Nicholas Angel is sent there because, bluntly, he’s too good at his job, and he’s making his city colleagues look bad. The proverbial fish out of water, Angel soon discovers that not everything in Sandford is quite as it seems, and joins forces with Nick Frost’s lumbering Danny Butterman to find out what’s what.
Hot Fuzz then proceeds to have a rollicking good time in both tipping its hat to the genre films that are clearly its loving inspiration, and coming up with a few tricks of its own. It does comedy better than action, with plenty of genuine laugh-out-loud moments, but it’s no slouch either when the tempo needs raising. One of the many strong cards it plays is its terrific cast, which includes former 007 Timothy Dalton, Bill Nighy, Bill Bailey, Paddy Considine, Edward Woodward and Jim Broadbent. --Simon Brew
On to the other half of this cracking double pack - it's no disparagement to describe Simon Pegg and Edgar Wright’s zombie-rom-com Shaun of the Dead as playing like an extended episode of Spaced. Not only does the movie have the rather modest scope of a TV production, it also boasts the snappy editing, smart camera moves, and deliciously post-modern dialogue familiar from the sitcom, as well as using many of the same cast: Pegg’s Shaun and Nick Frost’s Ed are doppelgangers of their Spaced characters, while Jessica Stevenson and Peter Serafinowicz appear in smaller roles. Unlike the TV series, it’s less important for the audience to be in on the movie in-jokes, though it won’t hurt if you know George Romero’s famous Dawn of the Dead trilogy, which is liberally plundered for zombie behaviour and mythology.
Shaun is a loser, stuck in a dead-end job and held back by his slacker pal Ed. Girlfriend Liz (Kate Ashfield) is exasperated by his lack of ambition and unceremoniously dumps him. As a result, Shaun misses out on what is apparently the end of the world. In a series of beautifully choreographed and edited scenes, including hilarious tracking shots to and from the local shop, he spectacularly fails to notice the death toll and subsequent zombie plague. Only when one appears in their back garden do Shaun and Ed take notice, hurling sundry kitchen appliances at the undead before breaking out the cricket bat. The catastrophe proves to be the catalyst for Shaun to take charge of his life, sort out his relations with his dotty mum (Penelope Wilton) and distant stepdad (Bill Nighy), and fight to win back his ex-girlfriend. Lucy Davis from The Office and Dylan Moran of Black Books fame head the excellent supporting cast. --Mark Walker
Synopsis
Features the films Hot Fuzz and Shaun of the Dead, comedies that parody police action films and horror films respectively. In Hot Fuzz, Police officer Nicholas Angel (Simon Pegg) is transferred to a rural village. On arrival, Angel teams up with the oaf-like PC Danny Butterman (Nick Frost) and together they investigate a series of mysterious murders, all of which are classed as ‘accidents’ by the increasingly strange townsfolk. In Shaun of the Dead, Shaun (Simon Pegg) and his best friend Ed (Nick Frost) find their lives a little busy as the dead are coming back to life and trying to eat the living. Now they must rescue the family and take them to a place of safety. The local pub seems the obvious choice to them.

Two of my favourite movies: British action comedy is such a rare treat !
This is a great value box set that contains two of my favourite movies of all time. Both are created by and star the same talented people !
Whose visual and comedic styles are unique, innovative, fresh and appealing !
Here are my separate reviews for both movies:
Hot Fuzz Review:
This movie had past my expectations!
It's even more funny and action packed than Shaun of the Dead !
Ever since seeing Shaun of the Dead and seeing spaced , I have been a huge Pegg/Frost/Wright fan !
I love their wonderful blend of straight faced yet absurd comedy and stylish small budget yet big results type action.
Their scripts also seem brilliantly crafted.
The delivery of dialogue, timing choreography and pacing of plot are all very well executed. It's a joy to watch this movie flow from scene to scene.
And of course it is all very funny, while trying to keep a macho stiff upper lipped atmosphere. ( Not in an entirely serious way though )
These boys seem to continue to give us great innovation through their style of British action comedy and continue to impress.
I get oh so very excited when I see something new from them ..... and they don't do so many projects together, but when they do turn out something it usually is top notch stuff.
This movie is about an overachieving police officer of London who has been recently promoted to sergeant.
Unfortunately there are no sergeant positions in London ( Or so his jealous superiors tell him ), so he is unwillingly transfered to the countryside village of Sanford.
This gives our hero with not a lot to do considering the low crime rate of the countryside or so it seems.
Unlike Shaun of the Dead which I thought started off great, had a great middle and ended a bit anti-climatic .... Hot Fuzz seemed to be the opposite .... it didn't start off so great, built up great stuff during the middle and ended with a bang/ a huge payoff ..... which I suppose is a lot better.
Funnily enough there a few scenes that contain the kind of gore in their last big movie, which almost seem out of place/over the top for a cop movie , but does add an eerie chill to it all.
All in all another unique watch and it's good to see more action British movies.
A must for British comedy lovers and regulars of the cop buddy genre will appreciate it greatly too.
These guys are just such a unique kind of funny , it's hard to explain in words , so just watch and experience it for yourself.
i hope the boys continue to put new spins on old genres and continue to gently poke fun at time while still creating a great movie for us that genuinely great in it's own right.
Currently one of my top fav movies of all time. I can't wait to see what these boys get up to next on their next project together.
Shaun of the Dead Review:
One of my top favourite movies !
A fresh genre frakenstein of comedy , zombie horror and light romance !
How can you not like such an idea , if done really well ?
and this is done very well indeed !
It's almost genius , it's so finely crafted !
Wonderfully timed satirical humor which is combined with many well known faces of British comedy in recent years and enough gore that's not over the top ( except for one scene perhaps )
With a realistic enough and great set of characters , because you can relate to them because they're so ordinary , makes you ponder ... how would you handle such a crisis ... and would it be as amusing as this ?
Definitely recommended for lovers of British comedy , who want a bit of a change and add a splash of horror with their laughs
The action ain't bad either ... infact there's a wonderfully choreographed fight scene that's also a bit ridiculous , but you'll love to dance to it , if you know what i mean ... but not as cheesy as you'd think .....
Choreography and scene/style switches in general are handled extremely well thanks to the movies' great director too !
Oh yeah .... i hear zombie movie fans tend to like this a lot too .... even if it isn't exactly 100% serious at times .... but it is as mercilessly slapstick as say ... the scary movie series ... which i think SOTD outclasses easily ..... this is the best combination of comedy and horror you'll find !
both great films
Shaun of the dead is proberly one of the greatest films ever!! very funny and a great comedy duo between simon pegg and nick frost. Hot fuzz even though not quite as good as shaun of the dead in my opinion because of the two main characters it is also a great film waiting for the third film of the trilogy cnt wait.
Great for teenagers/young adults
These are fun films and need to be approached with this attitude in mind
Hot Fuzz - watch with wonder how a british "sherriff" cleans up a town, against all the odds with very watchable "overacting" by the various characters involved.
Shaun of the Dead - As long as films like this are made "ham acting" will never be dead - just like the zombies!
Maybe our hero is not quite the "Suave/Sophisticated" person we would like to be - or did they do that on purpose?
Both are good value for money for this genre and should keep you amused in varying degrees
