Pinnacle Not The Summit
Studio 11 strikes me as purely a response to the introduction of Windows Vista without adding anything much at all. It is Vista compatible whereas older versions are not. If you are running XP then get an older version i.e.9 or 10 which are stable now as they have had their usual Pinnacle "patchwork", and are becoming very much cheaper on Amazon and Ebay. If you are a novice or just want an easy to operate piece of software then Pinnacle is for you, and if you follow their guidelines re minimum specs etc. you should have very little problems with crashes ( all non linear video editing programs crash from time to time-they are very sophisticated pieces of kit). Because these programs capture video, edit, add effects, author and burn to DVD amongst other things there will be trade offs in some parts of the program-e.g. Studio 11 is not the best MPeg encoder in the world but is adequate for most home video applications.
The biggest problem with Studio is that if you want to do anything above the basic it will cost you with add ons available for purchase within the program. Pinnacle give very little away for free, better value is to be had from Ulead Video 11 Plus which gives 5.1 surround sound for example, as standard.
I used Studio 9 plus before I upgraded to Vista and am disappointed by how basic the basic version of 11 actually is. I use a variety of different programs to get results including Virtual Dub, Ulead studio 11 Plus, Pinnacle Studio 11, DVD Styler etc etc.
All in all its a good place to start, if you cannot afford the plus verion, and if you ever did any analogue editing this program and others like it are like heaven. Try a download trial version of Ulead before you buy anything-its good fun.
Thoroughly Impressed!
I was amazed how easy this package is to use. I had expected to spend hours trawling through instructions but all the features are really easy to find and get to grips with. Can't say I had any problems with it crashing either (as previous reviewers seem to have done). Perfect if you're new to making home movies and haven't got the faintest idea what you're doing.
Studio 11 - Reasonably impressed
Whilst i'd class myself as a computer expert, i'm a novice when it comes to video-editing software and so when I was looking for a package, I wanted something fairly cheap that would provide maximum functionality, whilst remaining intuitive - I have no inclination to become an expert in this area!
Having looked at a number of reviews, I decided to purchase Studio 11 and I have now been using it for a couple of weeks. My experience is as follows:
The loading process was fine but took an absolute age, due to the fact that it loads 5GB of data. For me this meant that I had to use partitioning software to expand my C-drive to accommodate - I suppose you could always load it on a different partition, but I prefer to keep programs on C. I also had to put more memory in my machine to bring it up to the recommended 2GB Ram - well worth the investment, believe me! Fortunately memory is quite cheap (or at least my type is) and so no great issues there, but obviously if you can't sort this for yourself then you may have to factor in that cost as well.
Once the program was loaded I found the interface to be fairly intuitive and better than freebie programs that I had previously tried to use, but failed to master. I did find it a bit of a pain though that there are reminders all through the program that you can purchase additional stuff. For basic tasks though there are enough facilities there for an average user, doing average things.
Some of the standard menus available are very Americanised, but these can be edited at will if you don't come from that part of the world. You can also create your own stuff from scratch, which is not that difficult to do.
Having looked at a number of forums about Pinnacle Studio there are numerous comments about stability issues in earlier versions and also about Studio 11 when used in a Vista environment. I have XP and I have not had a single problem so far, as regards stability - see following comments.
One problem I have had is that when I burn a DVD, the highlighting of the menu button flashes intermittently. This makes it difficult to orientate your way through the various chapters. Due to this problem I have had cause to contact the much-maligned 'Live Chat' facility. All that I can tell you about this service is that the two-times I have used it, I have had quick responses. They haven't managed to sort my problem yet though and i've a sneaking suspicion that there is a bug in the program that they either don't know about, or are not admitting to.
I find it frustrating that I can't get to the bottom of my problem and I have considered returning the software due to it. The thing is though that I don't see any alternative software in this price-bracket that offers anything equivalent / better e.g. Adobe seems to get slated in the forums. I guess i'll just have to live with the problem and hope that a future update will resolve it. In all honesty though I reckon it is something specific to my configuration and hopefully few people will suffer it.
Overall I can recommend this software if you have a powerful computer and you use XP. Had it not been for the one error that I haven't yet managed to fix / circumvent, it would have been 5 without a shadow of doubt. Note though that if you are on Vista, I would recommend checking the forums before buying!!!
Good luck - seems to be the order of the day for video-editing software, unless you splash the cash!
