Classic soul
If you like classic soul you'll love this album. Real instruments, real melody and great vocals. Sounding like it could have been recorded in the 60's or 70's, but still managing to feel at home in 2007. There are many influences here, including a big Bacharach/Warwicke feel on a number of tracks. Vocally Ebony has a deep, sultry tone somewhat reminiscent of Sade, however any comparisons are probably unfair as this lady is a star in her own right.
As a fan of soul music for nearly 40 years this album has rocketed into my all time list of top albums, I would recommend to anybody who loves classic soul.
agree with other reviews-great songs!
A fantastic slice of pure pop soul.Real horns and strings lift this music way up above modern R'n'B, neo-soul, urban - whatever you call it!
A real grower which if you listen to samples will not initially impress very much but in its entirety this album is a fun, bouncy, bundle of tunes that I would describe somewhere between Dusty Springfield and Swing Out Sister (remember Break Out?).There has to be a hit on this album but it would be hard to choose one track over any of the others to release so get all of them.
No summer BBQ desrves to be without a bit of Ebony Alleyne to get the party started. Go buy it!
Ian Levine's very best production to date
Ebony Alleyne made her appearance in the soul circuit in 2002 - she got signed to Sony and was put together with legendary producer Ian Levine to record an old-school soul album. Sony gave them a vast budget to record on, and the album was recorded with real live strings and a brass section to stunning results. All that in combination with Ebony's sultry voice and the beautiful melodic songs, this really is a modern day classic. Three songs were sneak-released as 7" singles, namely "Walk Away And Never Look Back", "Second Look" and "My Man", all of which created a sensation and received rave reviews.
The sadder it was that Sony after a row with Ebony's manager decided to dump the project. It has since been lying in the can for nearly five years until Expansion Records - praise be their name - picked this gem up. Levine and Ebony got back into the studio to record a brandnew track, the Salsoul-ish "You Caught Me Off Guard" which opens the album.
Ebony has since recorded two new songs plus a duet with Noel McKoy, all three to be featured on Ian Levine's "Northern Soul 2007" album, due for release in September 2007. Meanwhile, Ebony Alleyne's album deserves all the praise it can get, it has become one of my all-time favourites. Being a personal friend of Ian Levine, I've been fortunate to have had a copy of the album years before it came out, and each time I've been playing it, people have asked who she was. Even our window cleaner popped his head in to ask whom I was playing. This is nothing short of a classic! Don't overlook it!!
