It's just ok
The story is captivating and sad but I felt like watching a theatre play rather than a film. I bought it because Pater Ustinov's name was on it but to be honest, his performance was not convincing. If you are lazy in reading books but don't mind watching to just know what this is all about, then buy it. If you are after great performance, then don't expect much. Of course this may not be the same for you. I guess it's down to personal preference. De gustibus non est disputandum.

Typical Dickens.
This is a Dickens' version of the tragedy and misery that is inflicted on innocent family members by an addicted gambler. It portrays the gambler, the doddering grandfather (Peter Ustinov) together with his faulty reasoning and obsession for gambling, which transcends any consideration for others (even for a dependant grandchild), in a very realistic way. The portrayal of Quilp, the loathsome, money-grubbing landlord by Tom Courtenay, is second to none. Although a sobering story without a happy ending, it is worth watching.
