Editorial Reviews

CD Description
The erstwhile king of pop continues his renaissance, movingback to Columbia Records for this follow-up to 2006's '3121'. Hailed as a return to the "classic" rock 'n' roll-pop-funk sound of Prince's 80s output, it includes the single 'Guitar' and features contributions from old-school Prince collaborators Wendy & Lisa.

He's back!5
I recently updated on the little mysterious artist's music buying 3121, musicology and controversially - getting this album for free in the Mail on Sunday! If you missed it, don't worry as amazon aren't asking for too much for it. I was curious to see how he has gone about reinventing himself - we know he can from the gold experience which was made when critics were starting to think he was out of touch and then just wowed them all.

The first track on 'planet earth' is a soulful call to arms about the plight of the world which America is finally waking up to. Nice but who cares? We like Prince because he invented funk. Skip to track two to see him coming back with a bang, 'guitar' has all the excitement and thrill of his most famous tracks from the past and great lyrics - 'I love you baby, but not like I love my guitar!' *cue amazing guitar solo*. Many of the other tracks are slow jazzy numbers that remind me of his earlier work, in particular the ballads from the batman soundtrack. Not to worry though, by the time you get to track 8, Chelsea Rodgers will wake you up in style. Its not just the best song on the album in my opinion, its one of his best tracks ever. A funky, exciting number sure to put a smile on your face and a bounce in your step.

Enjoy

His strongest album in 12 years4
Before I begin I must confess that I'm a big Prince fan and have been since I first heard "When Doves Cry" back in 1984. However, over the last fifteen years or so his albums have been, shall we say, a mixed bag. There have been some fantastic tracks but also an awful lot of dross, and his last album "3121" was pretty dire in my opinion. His last truly worthwhile collection was 1995's "The Gold Experience" ("The Rainbow Children" was impressive, but not exactly commercial or easy to listen to) and before then his last decent album was probably "Lovesexy".

Like many others I bought and binned The Mail on Sunday today but kept the CD, and with some trepidation I put it into the player. You know what? It's actually pretty good! Sure, there are a couple of fairly bland ballads and a pretty tragic stab at rap, but there are also some great songs here. The title track sounds not unlike his unreleased classic "Empty Room", and "Chelsea Rodgers" is an uptempo stomper of a track which will sound tremendous played live or outside on a warm summer day (remember what they were like?) It is also great to hear Wendy & Lisa popping up on two or three tracks as well, and the great man is clearly having a lot of fun with this set of songs.

Are there any classics on here? Not at the first listen, but there are some really enjoyable songs here. If you're looking for a fun album with some solid songs, great guitar work in places, and a return to form from Prince, then buy this one without any worries. After years of duds he's produced something worthwhile at last. Somehow I knew he would.

Not bad, just not brilliant................3
Right, firstly let us ignore the fact that this was, to many people, a 'free' album or the fact that in making this a 'free' album PRINCE has annoyed alot of high street music retailers and get down to the real question: Is it any good? Well, hailed as a return to his rock'n'roll funk style of the 1980s, PRINCE has made a, shall we say, modest album. Its not classic PRINCE, you wont find a raspberry beret or a little red corvette on here but that said, its not bad either. Songs range from the up-tempo U wanna c to the slow, almost r&b Mr. Goodnight. A good album to maybe put on as background music, but you get the feeling that if more thought had gone into it, this could have been so much better. Not bad for £1.30, but for many a missed opportunity. A shame, as we all know he can do better.
