Madden is good (as always)...but not great (as it has been).
Got Madden for the PS3 on import.
Good stuff: Defensive options are better. You can highlight opponent receivers to mark them out of the game. Playing 49ers V Cards I had Nate Clements shut down Fitzgerald with linebacker help. Leading receivers with your passes is a lot easier with use of the left stick. You can also see mismatches on the field helping you identify weaknesses you can exploit.
Bad stuff: You can't design your own plays or make your own playbooks on offense! You can't see what a playbook is going to be in advance so I went into Play Game mode without knowing what I could run which meant the play clock is a killer. It means you have to use practice mode a lot more so you know what you can do with a specific book. Shame really as one of the recent features I've really loved is the playbook and play design, since I like exploiting the middle and the seam with slot receivers and so can create playbooks centered around that tactic. Was ok on the defensive side though cos I always play 3-4 so the books haven't changed much between versions. Also the mismatch view is more based on abilities like if you have a good running back so you always ending up seeing the same mismatch telling you to run the ball. For example, again as the Niners, I was playing a 3 receiver set with Gore in the backfield facing a D playing with two corners. The mismatch view still highlighted Gore as the mismatch even though (logically) Lelie in the slot should the mismatch as he was being covered by a linebacker with safety help.
Playbook design would have made this a 5 starrer for me as graphics and gameplay features are as great as always and most tweaks have added to the title. As it is I'm giving it a four. If you love American Football you have to get this, but I've also got NCAA 08 on import and I've always found that series slightly more challenging. We shall see if that holds true as I haven't tested it out yet.
Madden 08 great game but franchise issues
Well... I bought madden as soon as it came out, its fantastic in superstar mode, which is why i bought it origanally, however after winning superbowls with my SupStar i thought id turn my hand to franchise, again did great and managed to turn the 49ers from rubbish 4-13 to superbowl winners in 3 seasons, unfortunatley in season 6 preseason the game locks up when training your players, Iv spoken to EA on a number of occasions and they tell me the same thing regarding a new patch (it doesnt work)and im not the only one with the issue just read the EA madden discussion pages. i would wait until 09 to get a madden title and only after seeing if the issues had been resolved. anyway great game if you only wanna be a superstar.
Madden 08 hits the spot!
Greetings everyone!
I recently returned from the states and whilst there i purchased Madden NFL 08.Being a huge fan of the Gridiron i could'nt wait to rip open the packaging and play it and play it did!!This game really does hit the heights! The graphics are awesome. The players movements look so real and fluid. There are many more tactics in each of the 32 NFL teams playbooks and i can tell you now that getting to the Superbowl let alone winning it is much much harder! There are even "player weapons" which identify not only the strengths and abilities of your players but also what your opponent is going to throw at you in terms of his threats. All in all this game is a class act!
