Amazon.co.uk Review
Funkadelic was George Clinton's chance to get serious. Unlike Parliament, Funkadelic exhibited topical lyrics and an almost heavy-metal edge, one that included screeching, distorted guitar and unsettling musical turns. This 1971 album, Funkadelic's second release, catches the ensemble in its early prime. The Hendrix-inspired dramatics come courtesy of Eddie Hazel, while Bernie Worrell admirably handles the keyboard chores. Clinton's humorous, sober lyrics address poverty, race relations, and drug use. Musically, the band covers lots of ground: Everything from smooth soul and heavy rock to abstract psychedelia and straight-on funky grooves has a place, and these jarring shifts are what make the album a revolutionary work. --Marc Greilsamer
CD Description
Jimi Hendrix's untimely death in September of 1970 left a gaping hole in the funk-rock genre. With 1971's MAGGOT BRAIN,Funkadelic showed that they were rightful heirs to Hendrix's throne. This is the album where, all at once, everything seems to come together for the legendary band. Most obviously, the songwriting is sharper and more focused. As on their previous releases, epic instrumental compositions dominate. But this time they are much more coherent and less reliant onstudio trickery and psychedelic effects (with the exceptionof the album's closer, the instrumental freak-out "Wars of Armageddon"). The stunning title track provides the ultimatevehicle for Funkadelic's late and great guitarist, Eddie Hazel. This moving ten-minute instrumental has Hazel playing through many peaks and valleys, wringing passion from his six-string, and leaving the listener drained by its conclusion.Another highlight is "You And Your Folks, Me and My Folks",a song about interracial relationships that is one of Funkadelic's most soulful tracks ever. Also included are the heavy metal thrasher "Super Stupid", the prime funk workout "HitIt And Quit It" (featuring the great Bernie Worrell on organ), and "Can You Get To That", one of the sunniest, most memorable funk-gospel-soul songs in the band's--or anyone's--catalogue. MAGGOT BRAIN is unquestionably one of rock and funk's all-time classics.
Customer Reviews
maggot brain
This is still one of the most radical [without being stupid or un-listenable] rock albums ever; when i say "rock" I mean it in the late sixties way, when jazz reviewers would say "here Miles Davis uses a rock groove" as opposed to the later radio programmers' "white music versus black music" meaning. The defining charecteristics are guitars [plenty of feedback], crunchy drums and cool vocals. This is the place where a Led Zeppelin/Pink Floyd loving hippie dude can find common ground with an old-school hip hop/big beat addict.
one powerful album
Just listen to the album once..(or perhaps twice), and you will feel as though you have owned the album for a lifetime. And when you think you are strong ...think again when the tunes eat away at you.... all you can hear is feedback from eddie hazels guitar solos in your head.....the torments of the chants that you are trying so hard not to shout out......
GROW MAGGOT BRAIN! GROW!
This is a classic album. A must have for any budding funkster's or experienced funkhead's alike! funkadelic at their finest! 10/10
