Though Motown was in full stride creatively and commercially well prior to 1967, by that year, the label was effectively dominating not just black popular music, but nearly all pop music in America. Motown truly was "The Sound of Young America", as the masthead read. Volume seven in the exhaustive COMPLETE MOTOWN SINGLES series collects every A- and B-side from 1967, and while not every cut was a genuine commercial hit, nearly every song is a perfect representation of the classic Motown sound.
With that said, there are plenty of towering classics across the set's 120 songs and five discs, including Martha & the Vandellas' "Jimmy Mack", two versionsof the Four Tops' "Bernadette", "Ain't No Mountain High Enough" by Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell, Diana Ross & the Supremes' "Reflections", "I Wish it Would Rain" by the Temptations, Smokey Robinson & the Miracles' "Second That Emotion", and the original version of "I Heard it Through the Grapevine" by Gladys Knight and the Pips, among others. Yes, it's a daunting set, but it's so packed with quintessential Americanmusic, it's hard not to recommend it to any and all.
