Customer Reviews
2007 album of the year?
Alot of drab, contrived and cliched hip hop was released this year and this album seems to have slipped under the radar. People dont seem to be ready for it. If you enjoy not just the 'classic' hip hop albums, but the poineering ones, that changed the sound and society of rap (wu-tang, Public Enemy, Cannibal Ox etc) then this album is for you. Its been said alot but listening to album genuinly feels like hearing the future sound of hip hop. Its difficult to describe that sound as it is almost completely unique, it seems to have been recorded backwards in a washing machine. It is a completely organic project led by Jneiro Jarel, Dr. Who Dat? and a whole tribe of likeminded musical pioneers including MF Doom. The whole album flows perfectly, ranging between broad influences and styles but somehow remaining linked through its production and themes. Although the lyrical themes are hardly groundbreaking Jarel and Panama Black are excellent rappers and lyrcists whos style and flow completely fit the record. This album needs to be heard to be understood, as its very difficult to explain. Just buy it, and realise what you've been missing out. Shape of Broad minds can be enlightening, hilarious, danceable, mellow, heart breaking and all with fantastic original production and a clear intelligence. Its easily the best thing Lex Records have yet to put out, and is pioneering the new sound and route of hip hop, follow it.
Hop-Hop can still be great
It's great to listen to some fresh and creative hip-hop amongst the dirge that dominates the scene these days.
"Let's go," with it's fast twirling beat really catches your attention. This dovetails briliantly into the soft dreamlike "Changes," for me one of the stand out moments on the album.
The MC'ing is well versed and melodic. I particularly like the soulful "OPr8r."
I always think that hip-hop is all about the beats and this record has them in abundance. Jazz interlude, "It ain't dead," is another high point.
The craft of the lost Art is a fine example of what this music is capable of. One of the best things I've heard this year.
