Prime British Indie
Don't worry Boz - Cud are still alive and kicking and playing live again (I saw them play to a packed house last year) - who knows perhaps they'll hit the States some time soon?
A long overdue rerelease for this legendary lp. Part of the charm was it's rough and ready production values (it has never been mastered before, let alone remastered!) I only hope the remaster hasn't spoilt it.
Highlights for me are I've Had it With Blondes, Push and Shove and Bibi Couldn't See - all firm staples of the indie discos I frequented in the early 1990's.
The success of their best of lp last year and their appearances at various festivals this year should help put Cud in front of a new audience. If not then the sales alone to those looking to replace worn out vinyl, tape and pirated copies should be enough to convince some far sighted record exec that Cud should make a glorious return and show all these young pretenders what a real indie band can do.
Keep your eyes open for rereleases of their other lps, especially Leggy Mambo in September - the one that came closest to giving a When in Rome a run for its money.
Go buy - no need to pay silly money on ebay any more!!
Just wait 'til the guys from planet X get back
I'm writing with a heavy bias as I love this album. This re-release is much welcomed by spacecudettes all over. There isn't a track wasted on this CD!The whole idea was to write a rock opera which was interlinked by little vocal samples, it works really well . This is just the A-side of the album (as was.)
Outstanding tunes abound , such as the remarkable " Only (a prawn in Whitby)".This was written after meeting Morissey by chance in a Chinese take away in said town. There's "Push and Shove" which was always a treat live and the bouncy and beautiful "Bibi Couldn't See" about myopia and scooters.
The second half is pretty wonderful too.Kicking off with "I've Had It With Blondes" which was always used to finish live shows whilst 'caveman susan' did his strut.
The great "Vocally Speaking" which lyrically is one of the classic charming Cud songs. Also the toe tapping "Wobbly Jelly" .
This album is a must have for lovers of intelligently written Agit pop with an Indie twist.May they never grow old and reform soon!
Goodbless their little cow udder t-shirts.
Momentus Event
There have been two great world events in the last twenty years, the first being the end of the cold war and now the second, the re-issue of When In Rome Kill Me. My vinyl copy is no longer listenable. To hear the lines "I was a teenage stamp collector, I lay on my back and you stamped on my face" again, what more do you want?
