Hailing from County Donegal and taking influence from the likes of Leadbelly and John Lee Hooker, Rory Gallagher was one of the biggest talents in blues. Beginning his music journey with the trio Taste before going solo, Gallagher built upa reputation for mammoth live shows, charismatic vocals andscintillating guitar riffs and solos. 'The Essential Rory Gallagher' includes the classics 'Follow Me' and 'Million Miles Away'.

What a shame RG is not here still.
I have to say what is going on with record companies, they take great artists like Rory Gallagher and keep releasing these best of and greatest hits type albums thinking that the public will fall for it - Well as far as Rory G is concerned hey bring it on because this guy is simply the best (IMHO) just listen to songs like Bullfrog Blues, Shin Kicker, Brute force and Ignorance & And Bad Penny to name just a few, there are many of his CDs to choose from, so go on and try a couple like BBC Sessions, & Lets go to Work.
The Greatest White Blues Guitarist Ever!! Believe it!!
Rory Gallagher is the greatest performer I have ever seen.My first Gallagher gig was at the Free Trade Hall in 1977 when he tore the place apart with an amazing live show full of energy and guitar playing mostly on his signature Strat. He had this presence on stage and used to charge around running to the edge of the stage to meet his audience. After the gig the front ten rows of seats were flattened.
He toured extensively around the world and I reckon on the street he is the peoples choice over someone like Eric Clapton.
This CD goes a long way to capture the energy of Rory and I think is far better than the "Big Guns" compilation. Some of my personal favourites are on here and the choice of tunes covers Rory's rock, blues, jazz and acoustic material.
The sound is mostly excellent but I would deduct half a star for the inclusion of Brute Force and Ignorance which suffers from poor sound and Slumming Angel which sounds as though someone is knocking a wall down in the background!
My personal favourites are Moonchild,I Fall Apart,A Million Miles Away, They Dont Make Them Like You Anymore, Shadow Play and Bullfrog Blues.
This CD also contains the greatest live guitar solo ever on Tattoo'd Lady (from Irish Tour '74). Quite simply without this track me and my mates would never have learned air guitar, the awesome energy in this little beauty especially in the solo at the end always sent us careering round the bedroom.
So please buy this Cd especially if you are new to Rory, you dont need to look for new guitar heroes, you will find far better sounding old guitar heroes. This CD has a wonderful variety of performances which will invite you in to the world of the Stratman!
This is a bit more like it
At last a collection that begins to do justice to the great man's music. Since Rory's too early passing he's often been poorly served by the posthumous releases, even 'Big Guns' was a bit disappointing to those of us expecting it to be the one that finally brought it all together. This release does a much better job and is nicely compiled, with some great photos and touching liner notes. It's definitely the one to buy if you are new to Rory's music or just want a nice compilation of great tracks. That said, there is still so much missing that we now patiently await the definitive box set spanning his days with Taste to his last recordings. It's what all his long term fans are hoping for and we want to see it on our shelves at home where he belongs before we're all too old. This release will certainly do for now though.
