Editorial Reviews
CD Description
This mammoth chronicle of the legendary Bob Dylan's five-decade-spanning career contains his best-known works (among them 'The Times They Are A-Changing' and the oft-covered 'Knockin' On Heaven's Door') as well as some obscure tracks from his more experimental periods. Though he was originally notable for his politically motivated anthems, a focus on musical progression has prevailed in later recordings. With Dylan's never-ending touring schedule and frequently evolving creative output still flourishing, this retrospective is as timely as it is detailed.
Customer Reviews
The Best - Since Biograph
As an introduction to the music and poetry of Bob Dylan this collection is only surpassed by 'Biograph' [1985] which went platinum. This is a review of the Deluxe version which comes in a handsome cloth covered box and contains a 36 page booklet as well as each disc being housed in not one but two picture sleeves. Unlike the above reviewer these vinyl look alike will never quite replace the wonder of Dylan on Vinyl for me and I hope there may be a limited Vinyl release of this collection - as there has been with every Bootleg Series to date. So much for presentation, 5 out of 5 stars. Contents? I give it 4 Stars because, while there is nothing bad on here, there are tracks that are superfluous given Dylan's vast catalogue.
'The Times They Are A-Changin' might have been sacrificed for 'Only A Pawn In Their Game' 'Restless Farewell' or the Jubilant 'When The Ship Comes In' and the first disc would be better for it. 'Rainy Day Women'is superflous but, more tellingly 'Chimes of Freedom' really should have been added to show new fans just how quickly Dylan was moving lyrically and consciously. 'Just Like A Woman' and 'Most Likely You Go Your Way' could have been ommitted and 'Sad Eyed Lady of The Lowlands' Desolation Row' added - to great effect I think. and so on, and so on. I know I am doing just what has been predicted here by other reviewers but look around at just how many compilations there are of Dylan's work and here was a chance for something more daring, - 'Hazel' from 'Planet Waves would have been a real show stopper for those who don't know it as would much more from 'Planet Waves' one of Dylan's 'forgotten' albums.
If you really want to get to know Dylan as someone who has heard a handful of his songs this is what you will buy - and I urge you strongly not to waste time or money on a one or two disc volume. These three only tell a little of the greatness of Dylan's power a four or five volume set, with a few unreleased tracks [such as iTunes offer] would have been much more impressive and much more inclusive of Dylan's undisputed greatness.
It was said that 'fans' at Dylan's official site had a great say in what we have here. If that is more than advertising spin then they must have been 'new' fans [rather than 'fans' like my age group who heard Freewheelin at the age of twelve and didn't look back.
If you buy this move on to each album represented here - and the many that are not.
Dylan 3 cd
This 3 disc Dylan cd set seems like a final greatest hits and it really is staggering in it's content. Having bought No direction home which has a lot of live and home recorded songs I find the Dylan 3 cd offering complementary.
Includes his early acoustic folk songs from the 1962 self-titled album with Song to Woody and the acoustic blockbusters from the Freewheelin' Bob Dylan and the Times they are a changin' albums through to his later hits. Immense in the scale of his catalogue worth buying.
Great & everything,but...
For me,the problem with attempting to stick to *only* 3 discs for a Dylan compilation is that the less popular/well known dylan eras (in other words most of the post-accident stuff) is that the SAME songs always get picked-All Along The Watchtower, Lay Lady Lay, Knockin' On Heaven's Door, Forever Young, Hurricane, Changing Of The Guard, Gotta Serve Somebody...
Which,IMO,sells Dylan short somewhat. Kudos to compilers for picking Dark Eyes though(THE song from Empire Burlesque-not saying much admittedly).Needless to say, everything here is absolutely great, and anyone looking for a way in should look no further.
