Video Description
In the summer of 2004, on a car journey in Eastern Europe, filmmaker Pavla Fleischer met and fell under the spell of Eugene Hütz, lead singer of New York's Gypsy Punk band Gogol Bordello. The Pied Piper of Hützovina follows Eugene and Pavla on their subsequent road trip through Eugene's home country, Ukraine. It is the story of two people travelling together on two very different courses. She hopes to recapture the spirit of their first encounter; he is seeking musical inspiration from the gypsy culture he is determined to preserve. The journey tests their relationship and challenges their perceptions of the music they both love.
This DVD release features over an hour of extras including footage of Eugene playing with Ukranian musicians, a 'making of' feature and the 'Start Wearing Purple' music video.
Synopsis
In 2004, Pavla Fleischer met and fell in love with Eugene Hutz, frontman of the Gypsy punk band Gogol Bordello. In an attempt to get to know the singer better, Fleischer asked if she could make a film about him, as he travelled his native Ukraine in search of musical inspiration. The resulting documentary, THE PIED PIPER OF HUTZOVINA, is an intimate portrait of a gifted musician, told through the rose-tinted lens of its director.
The Times
there couldn't be a better ambassador for gypsy music's infectious appeal. Hutz draws a crowd no matter what he does
Customer Reviews
Thank god they still let people make films like these!
I loved the film because it is different. It is neither a straightforward rock documentary, nor a documentary about Gypsy music and yet it tells us a lot about both. It is daring in the way the filmmaker gets out there with her emotions and motivations. It has a number of great moments, some tender and moving, others hilarious. The film made me laugh, tap my feet and even shed a tear. It has also made me think. For all the above reasons I consider it a great film.
Pay a visit to Hutzovina!
I didn't know all that much about Eugene Hutz or his self-styled 'gypsy punk' music before I saw this film but it's difficult not to get caught up by his enthusiasm and charisma. Eugene enchants and beguiles all across Europe - the mass play-alongs in a gypsy camp and Eugene on stage in Russia with his hero are an absolute joy. Eugene's clearly not the easiest of people to travel with - but it's huge fun to be along for the ride for a couple of hours!!
