Bargain
Great Amp and at a bargain price, I picked mine up for £120. Sound, as you'd expect from Yamaha, is warm, clear and has a nice bottom end. Has all the bells and whistles you need for surround sound and all the configurable options you need - I didn't see anything missing. Doesn't have HDMI support but you can't get that for this price. I have noticed a slight problem and that is clicking through SPDIF and AC3 input, that occurs sometimes at the start of a movie and sometimes when you jump to chapters.
The neighbours hate me now. . .
Having bought a HD recorder with multi-channel outputs I decided to bite the bullet and go for a 5:1 system. The speakers were easy enough to buy, and that only left the choice of amp. My existing stereo amplifier was bought in 1986 and I haven't given amplifiers another thought since then, so I was a little trepidatious, to say the least.
I had a good look around various retailers (including Richers) before deciding to buy this amp, based on the existing review here and others I read online. I can now report that it's a fantastic piece of kit. The only 'surprise' was that it didn't support the passive subwoofer that came with my surround sound speakers, so be aware of that - you'll need an active sub for this to work. It does have a 'no sub' option, but obviuosly you'll want the full effect.
Setting up was a snap, and once you settle in to watch, you can adjust each speaker volume individually using the remote. The sound it produces is stunning - warm, full mids and great top end. The FM receiver also does a great job.
If you want to experience great surround sound but don't fancy spending a fortune on an amp, then buy this one.
A Great Amp
I've owned this amp for around a year now and its a fantastic upgrade from my old cambridge audio A5 stereo amp. This amp is runnning 2 front mission 300w, 3 way speakers, an 85 watt mission centre speaker, and 2 B&W rear 200w 2 way speakers. It powers all of these in glorious 5.1 surround and is loud enough to be used as a club system. It has a wealth of functions and the sound that emits from it is amazing. Bass is deep and trebles are clear, it will handle anything you throw at it, from Tuning Bass to Paul Potts. Providing you have a decent set of speakers to connect to it. The amp has won its fair share of awards, and in my opinion, you wont find a better one for the price.
