Synopsis
Headstrong 17-year-old Baby Houseman hardly expects her family's usual summer vacation in the Catskills to be momentous. But then Baby spies Johnny Castle, the resort's dance instructor from the wrong side of the tracks. Johnny's facing a crisis: his dance partner and friend Penny is pregnant and has reluctantly decided to get an abortion. This leaves Johnny a solo act--until Baby agrees to take Penny's place. She has to learn how to dance first, however, and as Johnny teaches her the choreography's sexy, seductive moves, the two fall in love. But Baby's father believes that Johnny is the creep who got Penny pregnant, and he furiously orders Baby to end the relationship. Baby knows that Johnny's innocent--and with her feisty idealism and his dance talent, the two will prove to Baby's father that their love is worth fighting for.
Synopsis
It's summer, 1963. Frances, seventeen and innocent, is on holiday with her parents in the Catskills. She meets Johnny--the hotel dance instructor--and is mesmerised by him and his dance style. She soon becomes Johnny's prize pupil, in dance and in love.

So Bad It Gave Swayze Cancer...
Patrick Swayze is hilariously miscast as brooding bad boy dance instructor Johnny Castle and spends the entirety of this 1960's pastiche mincing about in trousers so tight it's no surprise that his range of expressions can only veer from mildly pained to pissing razors. Love interest Baby (Jennifer Grey) seems to possess features that would easily double up as a sundial and an acting ability only equalled by a traffic bollard. She dances with all the grace of a woman unfortunate enough to own the first prosthetic legs made entirely from plutonium, to a soundtrack so unashamedly 80's in style and content that you begin to see Grease as some kind of authentic historical documentary of 1950's teen culture by comparison.
The final scene where the entire holiday camp is engulfed in a hellish firestorm of white-hot ash as Mount Vesuvius erupts and Johnny is pecked to death by a thousand lizards the size of postage stamps is a fitting (if not a little contrived) tribute to the work of Russian master Eisenstein. Baby survives only to be tragically killed at the D-Day landings.
the best chick flick ever!!!!!
This has to be the best and original chick flick of my generation (36 years old).I can't believe though it is 21 years since I saw it at the cinema. The main actors are well cast although it is said they did not get on in real life.Anyone who enjoys a good love story good music and the ultimate last dance to "I've had the time of my life" should add this to their collection!!
Fab DVD with extras
Just received this DVD from Amazon - couldn't wait to see it as I have just seen the show in London.
I loved it all - it brought back a lot of memories.
It is a chick flick but my hubby enjoyed it too.
Definitely worth buying.
