Spiderman: Friend or Foe
When I 1st heard of the idea of this game, Spiderman working with his enemys I didnt think it was gonna work.. but in all honestity it worked pretty well. The game is very much your normal scrolling Beat em up which I will admit gets pretty boring after awhile if your playing it solo wise, but get a friend to play with you and you have a game that will give you some fun and some good laughs.
Lets talk about charactors, as you can guess you can play as all the Villains from the Movies which you need to unlock 1st before playing them and some charactors that are not in the movies like Blackcat, Rhino and the Lizard.
If you like Marvel Ultimate Allience and Xmen Legend you may very well like this, if your not sure about it, try and rent it out 1st.
Co-op mode is fun - don't bother buying it to play on your own.
The Positives: This is a fun wee game. Much in the vain of Marvel ultimate Alliance although simpler and a lot shorter. Essentially you control Spiderman and you select a "sidekick" to join you during your missions. The sidekick will be one of Spidey's long time foe's (such as Green Goblin, Dr Octopus - you get the idea...). The game is essentially a side scrolling platformer and it does this job well. Some of the cut scences are quite funny, the controls are easy and performing combo's on mutiple enemy's or a boss while trying to co-ordinate it with another player is fun (I found myself yelling "Hey !! Quit running in the opposite direction dude - you are knocking me off a cliff!" a lot). You can upgrade the health and abilities of Spidey and his sidekicks as you progress though the game. Achievement points are painfully easy to rattle out here for all those competative folks among you!
The Negatives: Well this has really all been done before. This game brings absolutely nothing you haven't seen before to the Marvel franchise. The game is very easy and very short you can rattle through it in a couple of evenings easy. Also the levels are pretty formulaic. The game doesn't really mix it up a lot. Finally, some of the sidekicks you can unlock are so woefully useless compared to Spiderman that one wonders what the point of having them join you at all might be?
Summary - Don't buy this if you want hours of single player fun but if you can get it cheap the co-op mode can be a good laugh.
Only for the Dedicated Web-heads! Definitely not an Amazing Spiderman Game
There have been some great Spiderman games on consoles over the years - remember Spiderman and Spiderman : Enter Electro on the playstation one? Or how about Spiderman 2, and Ultimate Spiderman on PS2?
This sadly, is a poor relation to those games.
It is essentially a scrolling beat 'em up, and it is definitely targetted at a younger audience, and not hard core gamers.
The graphics are not really memorable on a current generation console. They are pretty adequate, but nothing more. The cut-scenes are really quite blocky in their appearance, though in-game action graphics are quite nice, if a little small!
The big problems with the game are it's length, and the difficulty. Firstly, the content is a basic beat 'em up, with no real flair for any special moves. It is a button masher of a game at best, and quite repetitive at its' worst. And the difficulty is really weak - i completed this in just a few hours. As an example, i managed to beat the end boss first time, which is unheard of in most games.
So what are the positives to this game? Well, it is a really easy game to get 1000 achievement points on the 360! You definitely won't need a guide, or to look up how to unlock all the hidden collectibles - you will probably find them all on the first play through. Despite my criticisms of the game, it is quite fun to play - for a very short while, though there is little to no replay value to it.
I definitely didn't hate this game - it was just to easy and too short.
It is definitely aimed at children, and any parent reading this review can buy this safe in the knowledge that it is easy enough for most kids to play - and it has no violence in it, other than cartoon-style bashing.
For everyone else, buy it just to get a 1000 easy achievement points!
My final recommendation, is not to buy this at full price. It is definitely not worth the price of a normal big release game. If you can find it on Amazon Marketplace, then i would suggest buying it cheaply, second hand.
Enjoy it while it lasts, but don't expect anything amazing
