The Racing Game You Thought Might Be Good, But Wasn't.
This game may be cheaper than other racing games on this platform, but there is a very real reason for this. This game is cheaper than it's rivals because of the lack of inventiveness in the game. The first time you play on it you think it's going to be great, you can buy cars and bikes and buy and change your clothes, but you soon realise this is all outshadowed by the mind-numbingly repetitive gameplay. You may think that all the different challenges and races are different to anything you may have seen before, the problem is they are not, You Have Seen Them ALL BEFORE, and not only that all the chanllenges on the game are the same, the only difference is whether you are driving a woman a man or a box to your destination. Another problem is the extreme expensiveness of the cars and houses in the game, if you want to buy a nice house or a decent car you will have to save up for a long time. You will win on average £10,000 for a good race and £100,000 for a successful mission, but a nice house will cost you between £2,000,000 and £3,000,000, or a nice car like a McLaren F1 will set you back £1,000,000, so there just isn't enough money to be won to buy a decent collection of cars and enough houses to put them in. One of the achievments is to own 50 cars which is not possible because you can't afford the cars or the houses to store them in. The one redemption is being able to own motorbikes (or so you think). The bikes handle (if you can call it handling) terribly so you can't go fast because you have to be going incredibly slow to turn a corner.
The island is far too big and all the roads are identical so you will soon get bored of driving, crsah into a car and the police will catch you and fine you £10,000 per car you hit and this goes up with each new level. Another bad thing is that if you don't have quite enough money to pay the fine they will take what you have and send you to jail, which means you can't do anything for 30 seconds. The police are nigh on impossible to escape because their roadblocks cover the entire road so you can't get past this means you never have any money to buy any new cars.
Overall this game is not even worth the small price you pay for it. We all love cheap games but this time it's worth paying more for a decent racing game.
Thanks for reading I hope this helps you avoid making a big mistake in buying this game.
You Either Love it or Hate it!
Test Drive Unlimited boasts a huge range of cars and bikes and acres of road with no boundaries. This sounds appealing and actually works very well. The Graphics are good so drive around the island exploring and enjoying the scenery is fun for a while. However it can only last so long before you get fed up of it and want to start racing, and that is when the game gets a lot worse.
The races are all very similar and just very ordinary and boring, there are other missions to do such as Hitchhikers, delivery missions and Car transport missions, but all of these are essentially the same, the only thing that changes is what you are delivering. This is a massive let down for the game and takes a lot of fun out of it.
The open-ended game play also means that there is no story at all running through the game and you may well end up thinking "what's the point?".
Some people I have spoken to though really love this game and think it is great to just be able to drive round the island for hours on end, however for me this is not my idea of a racing game. So, Boring as hell or the perfect escapism? That's for you to decide but I seriously recommend trying this game out at a friends house or renting it first. That way you definately won't be dissapointed.
Test Drive Before You Buy
The test drive franchise has been around since... well forever and have always usually fell into the love 'em hate em' catagory. This is the first next-gen attempt and I can say it both delights and dissapoints in equal measure. Delights include the the fact that all cars look like fresh out of the showroom originals and the game scenery is well laid and thought out. Another plus is the different types of missions available which include, standered racing, Speedtrap Racing, Delivery missions (delivering a car or pacvkage to a destination) or hitchhiker missions (Giving people a lift in your car) The cars drive smoothly and won't take you long to handle so it is easy to get into and there is a lot of choice in car models to drive and the game will get you to drive certain cars for certain missions providing you with plenty of chance to fill that garage. Dissapointments in this game unfortunately are equally as numerous these include and perhaps the most frustrating to some racing fans is that all the cars in the game are super-cars and thier is not a great selection of bikes, If you are a fan of driving classics like the subaru impreza, Nissan skyline or an EVO IX or want to drive your own car in the game you will be dissappointment as most of these are unavailable in the standered version of the game (Xbox Marketplace Packs available)Another fault of this game is that although the game has a large number of missions available they are all pretty similer and some are over very long distences and have a point score meter which will decrease when you crash and when you reach 0 will fail the mission which can result in you failing having driven for nearly 40 game miles and when you succeed in these missions you only gain coupons which allow you to dress an avatar you hardley see. which can make them pointless. Police chases also feature in the game but are a hindrence as for the slightest offence they will chase you and if you are caught will take your game cash which can go into the 100000's and in a game where you require certain models to advance this can hinder your gameplay
Overall If you are looking for a Good looking racing game with all the Super-cars you can dream about and a racing game you can pick up and play go for it.
But if you are looking for a Racing game with reallistic style driving and prefer a more variety in the types of cars available and how they handle give this a miss.
