Customer Reviews
A mixed bag , but enough quality to make it worthy of intense investigation
Featuring exclusive Soul Jazz Records singles over the last two years for the first time on 2 CD'S. Some of the most notable artists in their fields around have chosen to work with Soul Jazz Records over the last two years. As well as working with all the top Dubstep producers recently such as Digital Mystikz, Skream, Kode 9, amongst others Soul Jazz have continued to release new music by the likes of Rekid, Ladybug (The Bug), DJ Rupture and many more whilst continuing to work with legendary dance music pioneers such as ESG.
Dancehall, Reggae, Italo-Disco, Baile Funk, Dubstep, German Rock, Post-Punk, Deep Techno and House all feature all on an eclectic collection that while unlikely to completely pander to everyone's taste in terms of quality contains enough class to make it well worth investigating. This album brings together tracks that have only been available on 12" vinyl alongside a mix CD featuring loads of extra tracks, again most of which have not been on CD before.
Soul Jazz have been famous over the years for dredging up classic treasures from the archives of reggae, ska, funk, soul and their compilations have always been excellent. This collection of three discs -the third being a mix disc- isn't in the same league as those but this is a CD that is looking to the future rather than trawling the past so it's uneven tone and quality are to be expected and to some degree forgiven. A witty percussive dub riposte to the London bombers "Dem A Bomb We" by Ladybug feat Warrior Queen sits on the same disc as shimmering Jean Michel Jarre approximating techno like "Satellites" by Subway next to legitimised insanity ( Some would say inanity) like ESG,s .....uhhh "Insane".
Some of the deeper techno tracks, although at times not intrinsically bad, are also a little more generic sounding when heard out of a stricter genre context, with Subway and Matias Aguayo being notable exceptions. "Private Life" by Private Lives is strangely hypnotic with it's syncopated handclaps while the vocoded vocals of Skream "Pass The Red Stripe" sound like they have come off the latest International Gigolo's compilation , rather than a Soul Jazz one. Secondo,s "We Got It Like That" has an addictive throbbing funk pulse at it's heart.
Some is bound not to appeal to subjective tastes. Digital Mystikz for instance sound to me like someone assembling a right wing political party out of road pins while Tetine,s "Slam Dunk" would annoy a drunk toddler .Their "A Historia De Garca" is irritating as well , bringing down the quality of disc one which is the superior one for this reviewer. The mix CD will appeal more to the technically minded but there are different versions of certain tracks included here , though not enough to make it fresh and vital listening .
I suppose it ,s inevitable that in order to stay a viable label Soul Jazz had to start looking at contemporary music as well as the old stuff. Though the tone and merit of the music here is uneven there is hope that Soul Jazz,s bold step into the future is going to reap real dividends , though they need to be more selective in what they put their name to. After all they have a hell of a reputation to uphold.
