not quite perfect4
Ok I have only had the Zen for a few days but I know I have made the right choice with buying another creative mp3 player this is my 3rd one and they just keep getting better. The pervious ones were a muvo slim and Zen micro photo.

for me the physical size of the player has always been more important than the storage capacity and the Zen is pretty small the large face is the same size as a credit card and it is less then a centimetre thick it is also light enough that you just don't notice the weight in you pocket.

The sound quality is good but I suspect that it will be improved by some better headphones the pair that are shipped with the player are cheep I doubt that they will last long.

The screen while being small (but large for the size of the layer) is clear and has adjustable brightness. It is ok for watching short videos on but I would not want to try watching a movie on it.

The buttons are small like the rest of the player but are easy to use even with my large hands. The buttons are raised slightly from the surface of the player and there is a positive feel to them when pressed.

The menus on the player are easy to navigate and use. I had no problems with finding were things were without reading the manuals or quick start guide.

The bundled software is slightly different to what shipped with the Zen micro photo I had previously. but for the most part identical so I had no trouble using it the only new feature I have found is the video converter which I have experimented with and is pretty basic you need to have the video as any file your PC understands and then it converts it in to WMV format at 320x230 resolution my PC is pretty quick but it still took about 5-6 minutes to convert a 25 minute. Also it will not rip direct from DVD you will have to do that your self first and as the player can handle DIVX video it reduces the need to use the bundled converter.

Things that do bother me about the player are that it does not come with a case all my previous Creative players have but not this one this makes me worry about scratching the screen. I know that cases and screen protectors are available but I do not see why there is not one bundled with the player.
The front surface of the player has a high gloss finish on it not normally a problem but it shows up finger prints like you wouldn't believe meaning you have to give it a quick polish before letting anyone look at your shiny new player.

The only thing really left to test is the battery life. It is advertised as 24 hours audio or 5hours video but only time will tell how accurate their claims are.

On the whole I an very pleased with it and will continue to recommend creative MP3 players when ever I am asked (this happens quite often as I am the tech guy in the office)

Utter rubbish - avoid like plague1
Bought this Creative ZEN 8GB on 23/04/2008, was delivered on time by Amazon.co.uk as usual.
I spent 5 hours installing, deleting and re-installing the software on my compuer (laptop ADVENT, Celeron M, Windows SP2), but no joy : due to a missing driver, the machine doesn't want to recognise the player when it's plugged in.So i's looks good onmy desk right now, but that's all it does. At bit expensive at £80 or so.
I have emailed Creative support but no response (evidently).
If you have a few minutes to spare, go and browse the Creative website discussion forum : the sheer number of messags left by irate customers stuck with faulty or non-compatible players is frighening. How can someone put such rubbish on the market in 2008 is beyond me.
My advice : look carefully at reviews before buying one of those toys, as compatibility issues are in fact frequent.

Very happy after a lot of searching and considering5
I bought this Zen after initially liking it's over all style and size. I have found it very easy to use including downloading, initially music, videos and photographs. I now use it for music and radio purposes only, (the radio reception is VG) as my only gripe about it is I was expecting 8Gb however it only has 7.6 Gb! that said it does state on the box that 8Gb is approximate. I have managed to get 1700 songs on it with only 350 mb left (it's my own fault I guess as I am a bit partial to Rock music etc, and they do tend to last a bit longer than the traditional "pop" tune! With the SD Card function it will enable me to expand my collection and enable me to review some pictures as well. The screen is relitvely small however the quality is very good. Overall very happy and would recommend the Zen to all my friends at this early stage no horror stories at this stage and well worth the wait.
