Synopsis
SLIDERS, a smart, mid-1990s sci-fi series follows a group of acquaintances who become thrown from one alternate dimension to another because of a malfunctioning invention. San Franciscan Quinn Mallory (Jerry O'Connell) has devoted his life to physics, and works on his own experiments when not studying for his university courses. His latest invention works on the concept of a wormhole, intended to transport a person between dimensions. When he invites his professor and a friend to witness a demonstration, everything goes awry, and the wormhole pulls in Quinn, his friend Wade (Sabrina Lloyd), Professor Maximillian Arturo (THE LORD OF THE RINGS' John Rhys-Davies), and an innocent bystander, washed-up singer Rembrandt 'Crying Man' Brown (Cleavant Derricks). As the group struggles to find a way home, they find themselves in various incarnations of San Francisco still the same city, but with completely different people and political and cultural situations. The ensuing mix of adventure, time travel, and alien encounters brings together the best aspects of the sci-fi genre and makes for a fast-paced, involving series.

Waste Of Time...
Season 1 of Sliders has been available on DVD for nearly 3 years now (packaged with season 2), so why is this being re-released now...? To add insult to injury, this is simply the first 3 discs of the season 1 and 2 set with absolutely no changes. The final disc even has the first two episodes of season 2 still on it because nobody could be bothered to edit the originals. To me, this is sloppy and a rip-off to fans. Why not use this opportunity to make something worthwhile, such as encoding episodes in their correct order, or restoring deleted scenes. Does this also mean that the inevitable release of season 2 will be missing it's first two episodes? My advice: buy the season 1 and 2 set. It only costs a couple of pounds more. We're also still waiting very patiently for a release of seasons 4 and 5.
A rip-off and totally pointless
I totaly agree with the other reviewer. This is an utterly pointless re-release. Seasons 1&2 were released together two years ago, followed by season 3.
Sliders fans have been patiently waiting for Universal to release seasons 4&5 for almost three years !!
If anyone from Universal Playback is reading this - we don't want season 1 again, we want to complete our collection - give us seasons 4&5 in 2008
Please !!!
A Review of the show not the DVD release
And here's why I'm bothering...
Sliders has been totally ripped apart by it's owners etc. over the course of it's existence. Aired in incorrect orders, differently yet still incorrectly unless i'm mistaken both sides of the pond!! John Rhys-Davies was sacked for insulting the network exec's wife at a party. They lost Sabrina Lloyd and let Jerry O'Connel direct later seasons. Did they secretly want Sliders to be unsuccesful?!?!
And now they're taking the absolute mickey rippin off new fans who havn't yet bought the first/ second series.
Well - don't buy this, find a copy of seasons one and two together.
Here's why you should bother looking...
The original Sliders seasons were amazing, with empathic and non-prejudicial explorations of human existence and beyond, with humour and none of the Star Trek `tell rather than show' faux-academic pretension, thanks to the the `mortal/ flawed' nature of the Sliders characters/ relationships/ dynamics.
You can absolutely watch over and over again thanks to good scripting and direction. The cast are very overlooked as a unit, they gel and act together very fluidly.
There is plenty of humour, continuity, pop culture references from the mid/ late 90's! As well as genuinely thought provoking storylines. It takes on some of the traditional sci-fi paranoia but also elements of grass roots social consciousness, conspiracy and history. It's lighthearted where it needs to be but still very, very engrossing and probing.
Out of five this season and season two are 4.5/5
It's a shame Sliders didn't hit every nail on it's head quickly enough to affect the early seasons because the later seasons are effectively a different show.
Don't buy this box but DEFINATELY hunt down a season one/ two box set.
