A great product with a few niggles
I haven't used noise isolating earphones before, but in comparison to ordinary reasonable quality ones, these are fantastic! On my journey to work, traffic noise no longer distracted me from the music or radio, becoming just a background hum rather than roar. I even had to turn down the volume on my MP3 player. This was quite a revelation to me!
The sound quality is excellent, as you'd expect.
On the downside, the isolating effect seems to emphasise noises from your own body like breathing, which is a bit off-putting. Also, the earphones produce a strange whistle on a windy day. And I guess I'll have to be more careful to look out for dangers that I might have heard before.
Another problem I had was that the cables to each earphone were too short to reach my ears when the lanyard was around my neck. This meant my MP3 player was effectivly hanging from my ears and would gradually pull the earphones out. This was particularly frustrating because you can't try wearing these things before you buy (even if you don't purchase online). My workaround for this is to tie a loose knot at the back of the lanyard, raising the point at which the earphone cables are connected. This is much more comfortable, though I am a bit worried about having a knot in it!
Despite these little problems, I'd recommend these earphones to anyone.
Avoid unhless you wear your ipod round your neck
The key thing to know is that the headphone cable is only 15 cm long, so completely useless unless you wear your ipod round your neck or in a very high coat/jacket pocket. How it can be described as suitable for portable DVD/games consoles I don't know - probably contravenes the trades descriptions act but don't have the energy to follow up. The similar model CX400 comes with an extension cord - why on earth doesn't this?
When I emailed Sennheiser via their website they completely ignored me. When I phoned him they claimed no one else had complained and directed me to another supplier of parts who charged me £15 for the extension cable that comes free with the CX400. Absolutely unbelievable and Sennheiser should be ashamed of themselves.
Great headphones
This is a great pair of headphones. I've been using in ear headphones for a while and the last pair i got were lanyard style. At first i thought these might not be that good, but they were actually A LOT more comfortable - not only do they not fall out but the lanyard can also be used to attach stuff like a pen drive (since it's quick release). Lately I've used it to attach my bluetooth dongle which came with it's own lanyard.
For those of you that keep whining about the short cable - grow up. Those things are like £3 each (official sony ones). Go check ebay if it's such a problem. I still have mine left from previous headphones. That is not a reason to bring down the rating of a product. If you cant read the description, you shouldn't be writing a review.
Overall the sound on these is very nice and tight. They really give you a nice feeling of the stereo field and are nice for soundscape heavy music. The bass on them is nice and meaty (not muddy) and they can handle a lot of power before starting to crackle (about 18-20dB of bass compared so standard mp3 headphones which tend to die around 8-10).
Sennheiser is Sennheiser. Even their cheap headphones you get with an mp3 player are always decent.
