Christmas With Boney M - Boney M5
This album is a compilation of the two Christmas albums that Boney M released, The Christmas Album in 1981 and The Most Beautiful Christmas Songs Of The World in 1986.

This album contains 18 remastered tracks for this 2007 release. It includes the 1.8 million selling number one single, Mary's Boy Child/Oh My Lord which hit the top spot in December 1978 as well as When A Child Is Born, White Christmas, Jingle Bells, The First Noel, Oh Christmas Tree and the fantastic Frank Farian written track, I'll Be Home For Christmas. It also has a new 2007 version of Mary's Boy Child/Oh My Lord performed by Boney M with the Daddy Cool Kids

Although I am a bit disappointed that after releasing all off their studio albums, digitally remastered this year that Sony/BMG did not consider releasing both of their Christmas albums as well either separately or as a double CD release.

Perhaps with it being the 30th anniversary of Mary's Boy Child/Oh My Lord release in December 2008 perhaps Sony/BMG may consider for Boney M's fans a single reissue release of Mary's Boy Child/Oh My Lord and a full 2CD collection of both of the Christmas albums containing all the tracks in full for December 2008.

Anyway this is a fantastic collection of great Christmas songs which hold many memories for me and my family. I consider Mary's Boy Child/Oh My Lord to be my favourite and one of the best Christmas songs ever released.

The version of Mary's Boy Child/Oh My Lord on this album is the original 05.09 single version but it is also available as a 12" version lasting 05.43 on the remastered 1978 Nightflight To Venus album.

Mary's Boy Child/Oh My Lord was only released in Germany as a 12" Single so it is nice to have a CD copy of this version on the Nightflight To Venus album.

Boney M were one of the best groups around in the 1970's and 1980's and as well as Mary's Boy Child/Oh My Lord their 1978 summer single release of Rivers Of Babylon/Brown Girl In The Ring spent 40 weeks on the UK charts and also sold over one million copies. Both these singles are in the UK Top Ten Best Selling Singles of all time.

Christmas with Boney M....4
I was glad to see The Boney M Christmas Album re-released, especially as all their other studio albums have been remastered & re-released. The artwork for this release is so much better than any of the previous releases of this CD. I love listening to this CD at Christmas time. It always gives me a "feel good factor". Mary's Boy Child - Oh My Lord is a classic christmas song & well deserves it's top 10 placing in the all time best singles in the UK!!!. Feliz Navidad & Darkness Is Falling also deserve a mention, as does Zion's Daughter - another Boney M classic!!!.

There are two downsides to this release: 1) Not the full version of Mary's Boy Child 2) The bonus track (19) is truly awful!!!! - It is billed as Boney M fea Daddy Cool Kids but I don't hear Boney M on it....Frank Farian clearly lacks imagination on this track (sorry Frank). It would have been better getting Almighty to do a stomping remix!!!!!.

Plenty of great Christmas music5
The album opens with their disco adaptation of Mary's boy child, which provided them with a British number one hit to emulate Harry Belafonte's achievement with his original recording. The remainder of the album is, for the most part, somewhat mellower and more faithful to the original arrangements. Many of the songs are familiar classics including When a child is born (a British number one for Johnny Mathis), Feliz Navidad (originally written and recorded by Jose Feliciano), Auld lang syne (originally written by Robert Burns, the Scottish poet who also wrote some songs), White Christmas, Jingle bells, Hark the herald angels sing, Little drummer boy, The first Noel, O Christmas tree, O come all ye faithful and Joy to the world.

One song that I expected to be familiar but wasn't is I'll be home for Christmas. Boney M's song is an original that just happens to use the same title as the famous song I expected to hear. It's actually my favorite among the three apparent originals, the other two being Zion's daughter and Darkness is falling. I say apparent, because I think I may have heard the other two somewhere before, possibly on German Christmas albums. Still, they're worth hearing. Also here is Boney M's fine cover of the French Christmas song, Petit Papa Noel. A Christmas medley, mainly sung in German, comprises four songs of which Silent night is by far the most famous, though I suspect the others may be well-known in Germany.

The album closes with a re-working of Mary's boy child. This version was recorded (it says) by Boney M featuring the Daddy Cool Kids, but the kids are more in evidence than any members of Boney M. Some reviewers wish this had been left out altogether, but as it's the final track, you can always stop the CD player when you reach this track if you don't want to hear it. That still leaves 18 other great tracks.

If you like Boney M's standard music, it's likely that you'll also enjoy this. If you aren't familiar with their other music (and why not?) then you should enjoy this as long as long as you like easy listening pop music, seventies style.
