The "best value" low-cost 5.1 surround system I've found to date
Having worked on the development of multichannel audio media at Philips some years ago, I was already well acquainted with the kind of set-up an unlimited budget can afford.
Unfortunately, I personally do not have an unlimited budget, so shopping for a 5.1 speaker system for my lounge became a depressing journey through the halls of big-name electrical stores. For some reason, if you just want an amp and speaker set with a standard digital input, you either you have to buy high-end hifi components or nothing. All the reasonably priced home theatre systems seem to have no digital inputs as you must use the built-in DVD player. Since I have a HD-DVD player I want to watch movies with, I find this notion ridiculous.
I discovered the Samsung HT-AS1T solution on their website, but was amazed that such a key price-point product was virtually unavailable in this country.
Eventually, I found it here, and within 4 days had it hooked up to my 32" LCD tv and Xbox 360 elite. I connected these two devices in parallel using the optical and coaxial inputs (this was an afterthought due to my discovery that my TV matrixes-down the Dolby Digital stream it gets from the HDMI source into a not-as-effective ProLogic stream).
The smaller pair of speakers do have difficulties keeping up with the rest of the system, but at this price (and also since the amp settings allows me replace those with more tall-boy speakers in the future) I cannot complain at all. The sub woofer is a beast.
What a brilliant product.
Budget home theatre with a punch
I wanted to purchase a surround sound speaker system to compliment my LCD TV and existing dvd recorder/HDD unit without breaking the bank. On my budget it proved difficult to find a system that didn't come with a dvd player included.
I finally found this Samsung system which appeared to meet my requirements at the right money.
It was easy to set up straight from the box, but getting the correct speaker balance etc. proved more difficult - the instruction manual is not the best.
However, with perseverance, I am now delighted with the quality of sound achieved. I am currently using the pair of tall speakers as the rear surround units and not as front speakers - this suits my room layout better.
My only cautionary note is make sure you allow enough space for the subwoofer/amp unit - its large dimensions surprised me.
