Lulu's Best Period Of Song!5
This is truly a "collector's" package with rarely-seen photos, memorabilia, and liner notes that feature commentaries by Lulu herself. Nothing beats a CD package that has all the information and goods in it. The Atco Sessions were remarkable in that Lulu recorded her first album in the Fall of 1969 in Alabama with musical legends. All the big players from the later seventies were there, like, Jerry Wexler, Tom Dowd and Arif Mardin. Many of these songs were written by Gary Bonds, Leiber & Stoller, Randy Newman, The Bee Gees and Bacharach/David. This is a collection just as good as "Crayons & Perfume".

Of course, there is a lot more music to Lulu than just these four years, but what a fantastic period!

Lulu : No Boom-Bang-A-Bang!5
At the age of 21, Lulu recorded with Atlantic's label Atco. The results are astonishing. Free from her contract with Mickie Most, she was able to record some of her greatest material showing an incredible maturity with two fine albums: "New Routes" and "Melody Fair". While the sessions provided Lulu with one of her most memorable hits, "Oh Me, Oh My", the albums did not become hits for her. This is the same for Dusty Springfield who also recorded in the Southern US and recorded "Dusty In Memphis" and "A Brand New Me" (aka: "From Dusty With Love"). The two Lulu albums were too mature and were a jarring departure from her persona that the public was used to and while some of the singles were minor hits, the albums were sadly unsuccessful just like Dusty's two albums. Both artists ventured into new territory and created their finest music at that point in their careers.
Lulu, no longer singing material like "Me, The Peaceful Heart", "I'm A Tiger" and other catchy tunes was now showing a true talent for mature and soulful songs. It was too good for the public to accept. The same happened to Dusty. As time has gone by, these treasures are now reassed and critics have given Lulu the credit she deserves for her venture with Atco. These sessions are among her finest work and definitely far superiour than anything that she had recorded while under contract with Micke Most. We now have the opportunity to hear all of Lulu's finest material up to that era in her career. I extend gratitude to Rhino for remastering these recordings including material that was never released before. Lulu deserves this as she has often been noted solely for her earlier work while the Atco Sessions have been ignored. She has released fine material since then but if one is to examine Lulu as a recording artist, The Atco Sessions have to be included. America's Queen of Soul, Aretha Franklin was impressed with Lulu's work which says a lot. I recommend this two-CD set very highly though I have not heard the unreleased material as of yet, but I have the albums and singles. I eagerly await this release of Lulu at her mature best. This is a treasure and my advice to anyone who likes Lulu and likes the sound of southern soul is to buy this set. You will not be disappointed. Lulu is a rocker and a soul singer and these recordings are proof of that.

LULU --- Possibly Her Best Work5
This 2 CD disc set of the legendary Lulu is a real gem. Lu burst onto the British pop scence at the age of 15 in 1964 with "Shout", by 1969, she had had a no.1 hit in Amercia, starred in the film "To Sir With Love", in the UK had 12 hit singles and to her credit, won the 1969 Eurovison song contest. Lulu had some great hits during that time, "The Boat That I Row" [UK Chart Position - no.6], Boy [no.15], Leave A Little Love [no.8] and Me The Peaceful Heart [no.9] to name a few BUT in the 70s Lulu recorded her best songs of all time for the record label Atco, songs that just can't compete with the Mickie Most and Decca hits.
This great set contains all the tracks from Lu's two Atco albums, "New Routes" and "Melody Fair" plus B sides to the singles that were sadly flops, WHY???? and 7 previously unreleased tracks, what a treasure!! The tracks feature Duane Allman, the full cast of Muscle Shoals session musicians and are all songs that Lulu recorded for the label. They are GREAT, catchy and are with a strong soulful feeling about them, only 4 have been previously released onto CD format. This fact therfore makes this superb, valueable collection set, a must have for the Lulu fan. If you love her, the only female UK artist to have a hit single in the charts for 5 straight decades then this collection is a must have purchase. My thanks are to Rhino records for finally putting all of Lu's Atco recordings onto disc in a beautiful, deluex package.
The bottle line is, just do yourself a favour and buy this set, great chilling music from one of the greatest female singers ever to have lived.
