Editorial Reviews

Amazon.co.uk Review
Westlife aren't exactly full of surprises. If they were maybe we wouldn't be here discussing the release of their ninth (yes, NINTH!) album, another sure-fire number 1 a staggering eight years after their first. Barely breaking sweat at any point over their career, slow and steady wins the race it seems--and song after song after song of just-so pro-forma arm-waving heartache fits that bill. Flip them over and you'll find guarantees tattooed to their spines--and you can't knock them for sticking to the rule-sheet like good boy scouts, can you? Of course they're boys no longer, not that you should expect amendments owing to that fact. Their sound has been afforded maturity in recent years and we get a smooth continuation of that on Back Home, particularly evident on "I'm Already There" as they sing earnestly of missing their kids when away from home as emotions swell courtesy of climbing orchestration and cracking voices. Their voices cradle each other in their famously supportive Motown-aping style throughout, but particularly on "Have You Ever" as Shane steps ahead and aims beyond Ronan Keating's heights with his keen lead. The album's token upbeat song "The Easy Way" almost surges into N-Sync territory with a perky horn section, but your pulse needn't be alarmed. There are no immediately obvious additions to their greatest hits canon (perhaps the Michael Buble penned "Home", given time), but Back Home will reinforce whatever it is you think about Westlife--guaranteed. --James Berry

Customer Reviews

expanding fanbase5
I reviewed 'Us against the world' recently and it is the pure brilliance of that track (which will get to no 1, as all know) that has probably led to a raise of 15 places this week for the parent album.

So, all you haters and critics, how do you explain this? It couldn't possibly be the fact that more music lovers are appreciating that Westlife is the best band of its genre.

The lyrics of 'world' are marvellous and it shows great humility on their part to agree to Bryan being in the video.

As a statistical bore I figure 'world' should be their eighteeth no.1 and not their 15th.

I wonder if there is an arrogance within their management team re: release
dates. Both 'What makes a man' and 'When you tell me' were aimed at Christmas no 1s; when they were embarrassed by 'Bob the builder' and beaten by 'JCB song'.

Sure their loyal fanbase bought the said records but possibly many of them had young children and bought the no 1s. as well. (not to mention the non Westlife fans with young children as well).

It's not exactly rocket science!

As for 'Home',it is a very good (but well known) cover and methinks Mr Hightrousers underestimated Leona's record as well as probably ignoring the Robert de Niro/Take That factor.

Anyway all is not lost.I do believe that 'Back Home' has the ammunition to at least equal their feat of 5 no.1s from the same parent album.

'World' reaches no1.early March followed by 'Pictures in my head';'I do';
'It's you';'I'm already there'(I know it's a cover) but if released early Dec.,it will probably have the Christmas effect 'Home' was supposed to have;finishing off with track 5,6,8 or 12.

There you are lads-in return for a brilliant mature album-I've planned your single release scedule, so you can bask in the glory of beating your own feat of 5 no.1s off the same parent album and who knows, if your tour schedule permits video shoots, maybe 4 no,1s in the same calendar year is in danger. And if as 'Scouting For Girls' maintain 'Elvis ain't dead', the pelvis will be getting a little anxious.

To digress statistically, I'm amazed that the brilliant Snow Patrol are at no. 59 in both chart formats, some 18 months after 'Chasing Cars' entered the singles chart. I mention it here 'cos it's convenient and I believe they deserve some recognition, which I've now done!

I'd love to know the odds on that; must be trillions to one.

Lastly, thanks for a brilliant album lads and, be honest you fans, who's relieved Duffy has peaked early with 'Mercy'!

Once a year!! is more than enough!!1
Funny how the music business make their money by putting together a bunch of pretty boys who can't release their own original material!! and brainwash women/girls into thinking their something special?????? WAKE UP! notice how they always released an album when music sales are at their peak! yep! Christmas season :) work it out, their making money off you people with other peoples tunes? I feel so sorry for the diehard fans that insist Westlife have talent? the greatest singers around? please grow up! and expand your large 10 cd collection! which has probably got pictures of guys you fancy on the front? its insulting for guys like me who owns 100's! of good albums! to be in the presence of Westlife nerds that think they know everything about music? love the comment someone made about how popular would Westlife be if they all looked like Johnny Vagus :) LOL yeah, and still sounded the same :) I know what you mean! all those teen girls would say their rubbish! :)
