An Acquired Taste
Like the previous review, I own the full game via import, so it is not based upon playing a demo etc.
This is a game you will either love or hate. First of all, unlike the KUF series, this is a spin off, and plays in the style of an Action RPG, or Hack and Slash to others. Other games that I believe it is comparable to are Phantasy Star Online/Universe, Diablo and Vagrant Story to an extent (will explain).
To some, who aren't fans of this genre, you will get bored quite quickly, as it is basically taking on hordes of mobs and hacking your way through them. However, this isn't all that the game offers, and fans of the genre will find this a compelling game to play. You can play solo, or the game offers a very user friend co-op option, with easy drop in and out, which adds a whole new level to game play.
The items in this game are solid. There are a vast array of items at offer, all giving different aesthetics. You can hold two at once, so the are many different combinations. Like previously, I compared this to Vagrant Story. For those who remember this game, it had a workshop where you can mix items in a workshop. Circle of Doom has something similar in the form of Synthesis, which is where you can mix items together, sometimes with abilities to power up your old items. This is quite deep, and to those without the patience, may get annoyed with it, but it allows people to create some good items, and to trade them online etc.
Aesthetically, I found the game very solid. The graphics are nothing groundbreaking, but they are very well presenting, with the different levels successfully portraying the corresponding atmosphere. The enemy designs are nice, and so are the character models. This is backed up with a decent soundtrack.
A few minor gripes about the game for me were the fact that it advertises destructible landscape, yet I failed to come across any until I used a certain character; therefore it seems to be determined by weapon type. Another point is the camera. Although mostly through the game it is fine, I found it sluggish to rotate to a view I wanted.
During the game, I came across a message in the fortune cookie item that said: "A good game is like a fine wine: it gets better with age, although it has an acquired taste." This rounds this game off very well, as the more you play this game, the better it gets, especially on the higher difficulty levels. This game is acquired, as it is hit or miss. Therefore, I recommend this game highly to those who enjoy hack and slash games like PSO and Diablo. For those who aren't big fans of hack and slash, or get bored quite easily if there isn't a vast array to do, this may not be for you.
Story...? I need no story mwa ha ha ha....
I got this game early imported and i personally think its great. This is a game for people who like to watch big fights against a single guy/girl. Don't get me wrong with the title - there is a storyline, it's just a bit hidden behind the fun of the game. when you press start there is a quick storyling, an lightning quick tutorial and then you start in a big forest full of things that want you dead.
the gameplay is easy to learn and the graphics look excelent (yes i know other people say different but i like them) and the multiplayer rocks. I love mashing my way through loads of enemies with a warhammer while my friends shoot everyone with arrows and guns.
it takes a while but when you finally get to go to sleep (find out in the game) you can get to see some storyline. However this is where the game reaches the presipis of its ability and then falls off into flames bellow.
The voice acting couldn't be worse even if it was done by the living dead (which is what this sounds like even on the living ones). The story basically is in a small nutshell - encablossa = bad guy. He has bad dimension with bad things, must return to light dimension and happy things etc. and there you have it suddenly your enlightened to the complex and highly emotional and moving story this produces.
All in all a good game that falls on its face at the story hurdle but the leaps the gameplay one in a huge bound.
Massively underated game
Ill keep this short because Im eager to get back to playing this fantastic game. The graphics are amazing particularly the fluidity of the character animations and the wide open enviroments. The attention to detail is stunning right down to the way the cloaks and hair sway when moving. Its been criticised for been repetitive but its an old fashioned hack and slash RPG so what do people expect? Its all about running around killing monsters, picking up loot, equipping bigger and better weapons and armour, leveling up and fighting end of level bosses. If you like this sort of gameplay I guarantee youll love this game.
