2006 X-Factor winner Leona Lewis's long-awaited debut LP 'Spirit' comes nearly a year after her first single, 'A MomentLike This'. Preceded by 'Bleeding Love', this release sees Lewis collaborating with a wealth of different producers andwriters (as well as the ubiquitous Simon Cowell as executive producer) including Damon Dash and Ne-Yo. The sound rangesfrom slick R&B pop to power ballads, finding room as well for a delicate version of Ewan Macoll's 'The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face'. Lewis herself was heavily involved in the writing process, sharing credits on several of the songs on 'Spirit'.

Editorial Reviews
Amazon.co.uk Review
Leona Louise Lewis is something of an anomaly. Not only is she pretty and endowed with a wonderfully elastic (four-octave) vocal range--she’s also a committed vegetarian and one of the few X Factor/TV talent show winners not to immediately try to capitalise on her success with an album of weak covers. Instead, her mentor Simon Cowell (and team) have coaxed Lewis into the studio with some of America’s biggest talents--Dallas Austin, Jam & Lewis--and come up with an album of weak originals. You couldn’t exactly call "Spirit" a bad album. It carries memorable melodies, some classic song-writing and, of course, Lewis’ seriously potent voice (she’s been compared to Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey already). But what the album lacks is personality. Songs like "Bleeding Love" (produced by Ryan Tedder and Jesse McCartney) are technically flawless, but you’re left thinking ‘is this all the sass and sparkle a bonafide Hackney gal can muster?’ "The Best You Never Had", the Ne-Yo produced "I'm You" and many other songs here follow this play-it-safe formula, while the album’s ballads--"Footprints in the Sand", for example--are so bland even Whitney and Mariah would wince. Still, there’s no doubt Lewis is a real talent. Perhaps if she ditches the overpaid ‘superstar’ producers next time and makes the album she wants to make, we might finally hear some of her real ‘spirit’. --Danny McKenna

overrated rubbish people rate this pathetic!!
no offence to leona lewis she deserved to win x factor she was the best singer but for me she sounds like a mariah carey wannabe and thats not a good thing too much squealing you can sing in the style she does but in a more controlled manner and not just do that high note for the sake of it if you want a singer with good range and soul try minnie riperton shes fab what soul and voice she sings to the groove and the music is quality this album i got bought and hated it too rnb not original enough for me deffinitely no minnie riperton r.i.p. dont waste youre money on this!! anouther thing why does simon cowell rate her so much he is right up her arse he forget the talented mr will young will has a unique soulfull voice and he is distinctive leona lewis sounds like loads of other female singers of this genre its awfull mr cowell needs to appreciate will young more fridays child the album wow!! and his new album im excited about!! will is the only good thing from all the talent shows will rocks!!
Wow! A great album from an incredibly talented girl!
This album seems to be one which you either love or hate. Personally, I love it! Whereas some people feel that after a year's wait, this does not live up to the hype, I would definitely disagree. It is very rare that I find an album where I love every single track, but this is it. The main problem for Leona is that she went through the x-factor singing flawless renditions of some of the world's best known and best loved songs. Unfortunately, therefore, she was almost expected to produce an album of tracks which could rival these songs. And there is barely ever an album, no matter how great the artist, that contains nothing but classics. Lets be honest, though, Leona is the X-Factor's most deserved winner and is seriously talented. This indeed has some superb tracks and her singing is stunning. But, despite some up-tempo moments, it's definitely a very soulful album that makes use of her incredible voice so keep this in mind! To sum it up, wow!
Don't believe the hype
I didn't actually pay good money for this, I was given it by a friend, and she couldn't stand it either. This is just another warbling songstress in the style of Houston or Carey, no doubt hyped to death by Simon Cowell. Anyway the good news is we made a decent return on it at a car boot sale, ear plugs for the buyer were not provided.
