Product Description

As well as featuring all of the 1957 recordings recordings marketed as being by both The Crickets and as by Buddy Holly, Not Fade Away: Buddy Holly 1957 -The Complete Recordings three CD set also includes a wealth of tracks on which Buddy and his friends backed other country, pop, and rock 'n' roll singers in the Clovis studio - such as the first (?) recordings by future folk star Carolyn Hester - along with the soundtracks from TV shows, on-air interviews and amusingly-tailored promo jingles to massage the egos of various music industry figures.

After serving his apprenticeship on local West Texas radio in the early 1950s, Buddy Holly then spent a year as a solo artist with the Nashville arm of US Decca in 1956; this move not only proved disastrous commercially, but also denied him artistic freedom. Having learned a valuable lesson, in early 1957 Buddy Holly formed his own group, The Crickets, and began utilising the well-equipped recording facility belonging to Norman Petty in Clovis, New Mexico. Here he produced finished masters for the Brunswick and Coral labels, which would include influential rock 'n' roll classics such as "That'll Be The Day", "Peggy Sue", "Not Fade Away", "Oh Boy!" and "Maybe Baby" - all of which can be found on this entertaining and important compilation.

Customer Reviews

BEWARE3
Received my copy today and boy was I excited! 90 tracks of early Buddy Holly!

WRONG!!!!!!!!

CD #1 has 16 Buddy Holly songs and I will say now that all Holly material on this 3 CD set is great to have. However the other 16 tracks are from other artists recorded by Norman Petty. I read somewhere that the Crickets were backing these artists, like Gary Dale, Billy Walker, Jim Robinson and Jack Huddle.

Jack who? I'm sorry; but when you look down the track listings on the Amazon site you don't see a mention of these names.

I TRULY THOUGHT THAT ALL TRACKS WERE BUDDY HOLLY & THE CRICKETS. Maybe I didn't read the small print.

CD #2 has 13 Buddy Holly tracks out of 29. 16 of those tracks by other artists of the time. I know who Carolyn Hester is; but wasn't execting it here.

CD #3 16 out of 30 Are BH & The Crickets; however this one has a lot of Buddy promos and phone calls; which is neat.

I guess in the end, I felt a little blind sided. Again, apperently the Crickets back the other artists; but I was truly expecting ALL BUDDY.

one should check better before buying3
I didn't buy this CD-set,but give it the middle-rate 3 for the original Buddy Holly-tracks on it.Permit me to say the following to the 2 previewers who are disappointed : when I'm looking for a CD to buy I ALWAYS CHECK Amazon.UK AND Amazon.Com USA). In the case of this Buddy Holly CD-set Amazon.Com clearly indicates the COMPLETE TRACKLISTING,giving also the names of the OTHER ARTISTS involved in this release. Many times there is a difference in information, given by Amazon.UK and Amazon.Com (USA)

Blinded by the hype !!1
Like the above reviewer, I bought this 3 CD set expecting it to be all Buddy Holly. I think that the record company should be prosecuted under the Trade Descriptions Act. The actual Buddy recordings should have been condensed onto 1 CD and the rest of the tracks consigned to the bin. These tracks are truly awful and it is extremely irritating having to flick through them.I have just checked the Amazon site again and there is no mention on the track listing that these are by anybody other than Buddy Holly. DO NOT BUY THIS CD unless you are a real Buddy Holly nerd !!
