Editorial Reviews

Synopsis
Chronicling a day in the life of Quick Stop clerk Dante Hicks, CLERKS captures the hilarity of the humdrum even as it raises slackerdom to existential proportions. From behind his counter, Dante desperately tries to exert some power over the crazy customers, his own love life, and his incorrigible friend and fellow clerk Randal--the type who sees nothing wrong in closing the video shop he works in to go rent movies from a better store.

Customer Reviews

Empire strikes back5
Outrageously confident and filthy, first time director Kevin Smith's dazzling comic debut was shot for under $30,000. Easily one of the best comedies of the 90s, this motor-mouthed conversation piece takes place almost entirely at the counter of a local grocer's where O'Halloran, slacker shopkeeper, and best friend Anderson, foul-mouthed assistant at the neighbouring video store, ruminate on life, love and bjobs.

Their discourse on the service industries of the Death Star is a wonder, and a case of mistaken identity with a masturbating tramp will leave you uncertain whether to laugh or vomit. "Dante you Sock-smoker."

Very funny in places4
As previous reviewers have said this has a lot going for it. The idea, which owes much to Woody Allen and Martin Scorceses 'After Hours', is interesting and it certainly has many funny moments. Dante is woken early and has to mind the shop he works in. A sucession of encounters with different customers, former and current girlfriends, and his mate who works in the next door video store leave Dante much worse off and in general very unhappy.

Perhaps my only criticism is the script, which in the main is very well written but occasionally becomes a little preachy with a number of characters spouting off at about how Dante should pull himself together. Nothing wrong with this except that I didn't believe the words fitted with the characters portrayed.

That minor criticism aside I shall be watching this again, as it certainly merits a second viewing.

Kevin Smith's First4
It's Clerks. By Kevin Smith. Need I say more?
For all you uninitiated. Kevin Smith is THE best indie director on the circuit. The creator of Dogma, Chasing Amy and Zack and Miri make a porno started with this 27000 dollar movie.

It's black and white, it's paced in a way you might not be accustomed to, it's brilliant. Buy this and you'll be hungry for more Smith.
