Editorial Reviews
CD Description
This eighth installment in Hip-O's impressive COMPLETE MOTOWN SINGLES series presents every A-side and B-side issued in1968 by the revered Detroit-based label. Although Motown's momentum had slowed somewhat from its early '64-66 heyday, Berry Gordy's enterprise was still issuing plenty of outstanding R&B/soul tunes, as exemplified by Diana Ross & the Supremes' dramatic "Love Child" and Marvin Gaye's passionate--anddefinitive--rendition of "I Heard It Through the Grapevine".
In addition to featuring tracks by other well-established artists including the Temptations, Smokey Robinson & the Miracles, and Gladys Knight & the Pips, the six-CD set also boasts tracks by lesser-known Motown acts such as Shorty Long (the raucous "Here Comes the Judge"), Blinky (the bluesy "I Wouldn't Change the Man He Is"), and the oddly named Eivets Rednow, who actually turned out to be Stevie Wonder (take a second look at the name) in an instrumental guise (see hiselegant, harmonica-led take on "Alfie"). Although the comprehensive collection, which includes a bonus 45 vinyl single, may be too in-depth for many listeners, for Motown aficionados it's pure heaven.
