A lad's rom-com (that the ladies can enjoy too)!
`Run Fatboy Run' stars Simon Pegg as out of shape security guard Dennis Doyle, who runs out on his pregnant fiancé, Libby (Thandie Newton) just minutes before the wedding. Five years later, Dennis realises his mistake but Libby now has a new boyfriend, Whit (Hank Azaria) who is rich, handsome and a marathon runner. Dennis decides that the only way to get Libby and his son back is to get in shape and take on Whit in the London Marathon...which is less than a month away!
I'd heard some mixed reviews before seeing this film, so I watched this at the weekend with low expectations and I think that even if I'd of had high expectations it would have been better than expected! It's great! There's some really great characters first of all, with Pegg as his usual, unsuccessful loser role, but each one of them are so funny that I was laughing at the top of my lungs from start to finish. The story wasn't as I'd expected it to be either with some really unpredictable moments that were absolutely hilarious. Although this is a rom-com it is definitely not a chick flick but does have the usual elements that make up that type of film as well as enough blokey jokes to make it appeal to the lads.
I'm a bit of a fan of Simon Pegg and Spaced, Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz etc, so this review may seem a little biased, but honestly it is an excellent comedy that I can't recommend highly enough. If you enjoy any of the above or films like High Fidelity, Bridget Jones, Big Nothing or Four Weddings and a Funeral, I strongly recommend you give this a watch!
Charming
After reading all the negative reviews I had low expectations going in. That said, I really enjoyed Run, Fat Boy, Run. The jockish, locker room humor was kept to a minimum, and what we were left with was surprisingly funny & fresh.
Simon Pegg plays an affable security guard convinced he has nothing to offer to the girl he loves but left, pregnant, at the altar five years prior. He's an attentive, if misguided at times, father who fears he's about to lose everything he holds dear to another man - played wonderfully by Hank Azaria. Never finishing anything in his life, he sets out to prove to his ex-fiancée he's changed man by running a marathon. Not an easy task for an out of shape layabout.
Surprisingly (I really wasn't expecting much) I found the film to be equal parts sweet, charming, funny and silly. Ideally I'd give it a 3.5 rating, but in lieu of that I'll go for 4 stars.
