Must Buy
I bought dynasty warriors 6 yesterday and have to say it's an absolute great game, I was always a critic of Dynasty Warriors and never a fan but this edition has won me over, with tons of character, weapons and game modes the game is jammed packed with next gen qualities, in fact when you begin playing the game you don't want to stop that's the quality of the game, perhaps the only downside to the title is the lack of cutting edge storyline however I think this could be a bit critical, I mean theres over 30+ characters each with their unique styles and variants.
Some good points, but generally a big disappointment
The problem with Dynasty Warriors 6, is that it had so much potential for improvement on the old games, and Koei didn't really take it.
LESS weapons, LESS movesets (sorry, but the cloned moves aren't varied enough to be worth mentioning), LESS stories, LESS characters, LESS to do. This game isn't any better than Dynasty Warriors 5.
The addition of the renbu system isn't especially great; charging the renbu gauge through combos gradually builds up your charge attacks, instead of the old system of just picking up weapons with higher attack. There are no more set strings of moves, instead allowing you to just keep pressing one button repeatedly until the opponents are dead or blocking, at which point you presss Y (or T on PS) to break their guard and then continue to hack the same buttons. Not much of a change really, and neither is it one to write home about; not good, not bad.
Picking up pouches and activating them gives characters special attacks ranging from arrow volleys (like Samurai Warriors), boulders (like comets from ...Samurai Warriors) but can also release a strong series of attacks... like musou rage from 5. Depending on your character, these pouches can be great or totally useless. They do, however, cause enemy soldiers to drop experience points... which is nice.
The duel system is back and less irritating than before in that you aren't fenced off from everyone. However, they have one flaw - your opponent WILL have increased stats and you'll remain the same, and he/she WILL have allies helping them and you'll be on your own. Time for a butt-kicking methinks.
I rented this on a free trial, and had hoped that LESS story modes and LESS characters would mean more story depth and more character detail. How wrong I was; they've picked characters that follow each other's stories (fans of the series will know that Diao Chan is pointless, that Zhang Fei/Guan Yu/Liu Bei all have the same storyline) and the stories are so generic they may as well have just put Kingdom Mode back into play. Yes, there are more (poorly done) cutscenes, but there isn't any more depth to the story modes than Dynasty Warriors 4, in which we had ... Kingdom Mode.
The character cuts, plus generic story modes leaves you with 23 characters to take through 19 stages in free mode, over and over and over again... much like Devil Kings. Except you can buy that game for £5, and not £30.
The one thing that IS a decent addition is that morale actually seems to have an effect in this game, unlike the older ones where you barely saw the effects until you'd slaughtered the entire opposition army. Aiding allies increases morale, defeating enemy officers/taking bases with allies nearby increases morale and the usual things decrease it. Allies cheer when they're near you and you succeed, and morale goes up. Morale does actually go down if allies die! Related to morale is ambushing - you can actually do this yourself now and that IS fun. Jump off cliffs into enemy units or bases and their morale falls, leaving them confused and giving you easy KOs.
This doesn't really make up for the rest of the disappointment in this game; swimming is just a pain and I'd avoid it whenever you can, climbing is okay, renbu is boring, and collecting pouches is...musou rage.
It's just as fun as the older games if you can bear to drag your favourite characters through free mode, but it's certainly no better than DW5.
Dynasty warriors 6 review/ preview
This next instalment of the mass hack n slash is not out just yet in the uk, but this game looks polished and next gen.
A lot of changes have been made to make this powerhouse warriors game look and feel new and fresh, new elements like skill trees and new powers and combos for each of the larger than life characters.
Expect to see more than 500 enemies on screen at once with no slowdown in any way. From what i have seen this is gona be a more indepth Dynasty Warriors experience.
I have gave this a 5 star probily because i'm a big fan, but i will write up an new review when i get my hands on the beast...... :)
