The 'Nice' Jim Davidson of old...
For those judging Jim Davidson on his later efforts & many home video stand-up routines, well forget that Jim D. This is the nicer person, the 'Big Break' side of his nature.
The cheeky-lad mildly-farcical comedy may have seemed a little dated for 1983-1985, more in a style of a mid-late 70s comedy, but it's a nice show to watch. The amount of now-well known faces is very high, including Anita Dobson, Sue Nicholls, John Bardon in regular roles also Brian Capron, Christopher Ellison & even a cameo by Linda Robson.
The show is set mainly in Jim's house or in a Pub, the house is set near a railway in South London's Elephant & Castle, yet you hear not a sound of anything! The days of cheap silent background productions! By this it does limit itself a bit & can be a bit shallow in content.
But all 3 series for under £15 of a once rare ITV sitcom is a good buy & having watched the 1st series & liked it, I think you will too.
Up the Elephant and round British comedy
At first it seems that this 80s series is dated, badly written, hammed up in its acting and cheesy, BUT after watching two or three episodes I'm hooked and laughing out loud. Jim Davidson is energetic to the extreme and makes the show. Some of the puns are painfully funny and the rhyming slang is hilarious. Popping up are characters now well known from EastEnders and even the chef from Fawlty Towers is in the show as the local barman.
It's a great laugh, carried amazingly by a committed cast on what was probably a small budget.
Love it!
