An album of quality & excellence
In an ideal world artists like Angela Johnson would be selling huge quantities of this CD as the quality of the production, songs and music that flows from this offering is as clear as a blue sky on a sunny day, unfortunately in the real world, this not the case. This CD is simply an excellent release from Angela.
Angela's input from production, song composition and on three of the tracks providing vocals is stunning.
All the vocalists featured on this CD put their own soulful stamp on each track, with Ms Johnson assisting with her fine production from `Dream Flight' with Rahsaan Patterson through to `Amal' featuring Ernesto Abreau & Angela herself, every track is a winner.
If this is the quality of volume one, there's no doubt further volume's will be just as good, an excellent release. A must buy for soul fans.
A Great Talent
This young woman has come a long way since Coolys Hot Box, and here we have 14 tracks Angela has written, produced or arranged and contains a who's who of the modern soul scene featured artists include Rahsaan Patterson, Take 6, Maysa Leak, Eric Roberson, Frank McComb, Gordon Chambers, Julie Dexter and Marlon Saunders.
Knowing the talent on show here, the album doesn't disappoint it could almost be a greatest hits of recent indie and signed artists.
The album mixes dancers with jazzy undertones and even a little bit of a reggae beat with Gordon Chambers, and a bit of Aretha type gospel on track 13. This album is great and the pace changes all the time, the other plus is the use of real instruments, which is like the difference between Lurpack and margarine. This CD also does not make the mistake of the producer applying extra loudness to the tracks thus compressing the sound I suppose this is where the woman's touch comes in, real music at the correct compression so that music is not lost.
This is one of the most consistent albums of 2008 thus far and is my favourite so far this year.
5 stars
Great first album as producer
If you know here previous work with Cooly's Hot Box & her solo projects this will not disappoint. She has managed to aquire the talents of a who's who of modern soul performers for this project. There is a lovely varied selection of quality songs on offer here and I for one will not tire of listening to this album for a very long time. Personal highlights are tracks featuring Rahsaan Patterson, Maysa Leak, Eric Roberson and Frank McComb. Angela herself performs one track 'Should've Been There' and it's possibly the best and most uptempo here.
Overall a fantastic effort from AJ she knows how to get the best from the people she works with. Roll on Volume 2, I can't wait.
