Challenging but well worth perservering with!
The only problem with "Denied Ops" is that it throws you right in to the action without any kind of tutorial and the controls are far from instinctive. Rather, it's a complicated system whereby you swap between two very differently skilled characters (a sniper and a heavy gunner) and function as a team using a combination of user-driven AI and strategic hot-swapping between personnel. So rather than being a straight shooter, this lends the game play a far more strategic edge. For the first twenty minutes or so I was utterly baffled and tearing my hair out but, once you get of the hang of it, wow, this game is incredible. It's been rocking my world for two nights solid now. The graphics are breathtaking (especially the super-destructible environments that allow you to blast towers off of monasteries with rocket launchers and the likes!), the tension absolutely unbearable at times and the dialogue quite amusing. Don't expect a 'serious' storyline like Call of Duty 4; it's more like action movie buddy stuff in the cut scenes, but this works just fine for me. You don't play a game like this for an involving story. It's just a really aggressive, quick-thinking combat simulator that taxes your brain and relieves stress with the best of 'em. Top marks!
Slow Starter, But gets Great
So i load it up and begin playing the first mission, 10 minutes later the games back in the case and i am online on COD4. Later that night i decide to try it again, the second mission i find as bad as the first but when i reach the 3rd the game becomes great, i did 5 more missions that night and have been glued to it since.
The graphics are good(nealy as good as COD4, the buttons take a while getting used to(My friend tells me there the same as HALO3 buttons)and the AI is very good and the destructable enviroments give it a edge on even the Top FPS. A downside is the switch to a 2 man team and the 1st person view from the classic 3rd person seen in all over Conflict games also that you have to keep the same two guns and you can't pick up an Ak-47 of the floor. As for the 1st couple of missions i would say skip them if you could(Feels like they let a 5 year old design them).
My advice to anyone is maybe try a friends first or get it pre owned.
The DEMO does not do the real game justice so don't download. :]
Conflict: Denied A Good Game
Not since i bought Two Worlds have i seen such a terrible and disappointing game. I believe that a one star rating is far too high for this game but i have no choice since its the lowest amazon goes.
I remember the brilliant (for its time) conflict desert storm games which offered a really good co-op experience on the ps2. When i saw that a new game in the series had hit the xbox 360 i decided to give it go but i now wish i had not. Visually its a bigger mess than putting your hand in a blender and reminds me of a low rate playstation 2 game. Everything from the scenery to the guns and identical bad guys looks awful (except of course in the deceptive cut scenes). The controls are a worry, how any developer can mess it up this badly is appalling. Firing your gun at someone is about as slow as throwing the bullets at them yourself and as accurate. (With the exception of the heavy machine gun). If your on your own controlling the other character is a simple process of 'you go there and shoot'.
With a story line as disposable as a babes nappy you sometimes wonder what on earth your actually doing. The two main characters are typical steryotypes and you wont be bothered if one gets shot down until you realise the burden of 'you need him alive to finish the mission' as apparently these two cant cut it alone the annoying voiced guy on the radio will remind you. So what on earth are they doing in black ops missions if they cant go solo? One guy is a sniper and the other a heavy machine gunner which makes them about as gooda choice for close combat as a jacket potato. You cant change weapon only add futile upgrades to the existing ones which offer little help in the long run. Don't even think about using the silenced pistol you cary around as its frustratingly slow and useless. The enemy appear to have come from the school of completely stupid film/game bad guys as they have bearably any registering intelligence except to waste all there ammo on full auto shooting you.
I gave up on this game after about five minutes but played on anyway only to find that i really wasted my time and to confim my belief that the games of 2008 are very disappointing after last years line up. However i will give the developers one credit. They made a game worse than Two Worlds, now that is an achievement.
