Editorial Reviews
CD Description
The band's leader Evan Dando received an immense amount of media coverage between this and their next album, COME ON FEEL THE LEMONHEADS. The press saw another self-destructive rock 'n' roller in the making and hounded him about his drug habit. This album, however, is a delight and has the same feel as a Big Star record, or the rolling melody of the early Byrds, but much more sloppy and loose. Dando is a fine songwriter and the first 12 songs on this record feel like one great track. The unlucky 13th track is Paul Simon's "Mrs Robinson", which you will either love or hate.

Brilliant Album, Brilliant Remaster
I just bought this in a local music shop that was doing a clear out of their stock to make space for an in house Video Games shop, within a shop.
Much to my amazement it was slashed down to £3.99! I've already got a copy of the original but to get a copy of this remaster along with the free dvd at such a cheap price, it was too good to miss.
I'm even more chuffed to find out it's about £12 here, but not to do a dis-service to Amazon, I'd happily pay £12 for it, and it's more than worth that - you'd do well to find it that cheap in any shops.
About the album, well it's just absolutely perfect always has been. I'm usually one to skip to the next song once a song gets past about 2minutes, even if its one of my favourites - but this album brings in songs at about 2minutes each - and packs in more in each song than most lengthy songs do. The songs are light and breezy, and take you to a place where you can unwind and enjoy the beauty being passed through your ears.
Even the more fast paced of these songs find some breezy level, a song like rockin' stroll you're able to whack on in your car stereo and rock out too, even if it's not your architypal hard rock anthem - it rocks in a different way - with good pace and frantic lyrics tumbling down the 2minutes like a rolling stone down a grassy bank.
I can't do this album enough justice in words. It's just unbelievable - to appreciate that you'll have to listen to it yourself.
The extra dvd (and the demos) are a must for anyone interested in the band. Sure I can flick through youtube to pull up some videos from time to time, but with this dvd I can whack them on my tv and enjoy the lemonheads videos them anytime I like.
BRILLIANT!
A classic blast from the past and then some!
Ok, let's remember that in 1992 this was a classic pop/alternative record that seemed to come from nowhere despite the bands previous album outings. The original record was just over half an hour long but from the first chord to the closing beats of Mrs Robinson, this album was a pop masterpiece.
In 2008 we have this, a remastered version of the above plus some great extras. The bonus material is beautifully mellow with almost slurring vocals and cheap guitar sounds, there are 10 demo songs (all bar one from the Ray original) which were obviously produced in and around the time of 'Ray' back in the day, with a new comer to most; 'Shaky Ground' - a personal favourite of mine. You can really hear the chilled beauty of Evan Dando's voice in these recordings.
A DVD also is included entitled 'Three weeks in Australia' which highlights some of the footage taken whilst out in Oz and again is basically tour biography taken during the release of 'Ray' back in 92'.
There are quite a few videos included on this DVD with the likes of 'Ray' itself featuring Johnny Depp of all people, 'Hannah & Gabi', 'Rockin Stroll', 'Confetti' & 'Drug Buddy' to name a few. The DVD is about 3/4 hour long and makes great viewing after a heavy session the night before and takes you back to those heady 90's days of pop grunge and care free days...The DVD is narrated predominantly by Evan throughout and he talks of the forming of The Lemonhead's with its long line of different band members.
Overall, this remastered version of It's a Shame about Ray is well worth the money for any Lemon's fans and folk who merely love guitars and pop culture, there is more than enough new stuff on here for the money asked. A great edition for your collection. Enjoy!
A Great Big Hug of an Album
For many, many years now this album has found itself on the stereo whenever I need to cheer myself up, or if I'm in a really good mood and want to enhance it.
It's probably the most joyous listen from start to finish that I can think of - not that all the songs are relentlessly upbeat or twee in any way at all. There are a multitude of different tempos and moods. It's simply that the songs seem to focus on the more positive aspects of life (or sound uplifting even when lyrically they are a touch darker). They encapsulate them perfectly as well.
What really makes this album shine though is the distinct lack of filler. Evan Dando was at his peak when he wrote these tunes, along with three well chosen cover versions.
Musically, it's the lighter side of garage punk/grunge with a certain poppy nous about it. Simple but effective. Juliana Hatfield's contributions add a shine as well.
As I said, there is no filler on this album but if I had to pick highlights I'd say check out `Rocking Stroll', `Rudderless', `My Drug Buddy', `It's a Shame About Ray', `Mrs Robinson' (Awesome version!), `Frank Mills' and `Alison's Starting to Happen'. Really though, I could just list all the other tracks here as well.
Buy it and fall in head over heels in love with it. It'll be a love that stays the course. A hugely under rated album.
The demo's and the DVD you get thrown in with this reissue are all well worth getting, if you are already a fan of the album and, like me, have a scratched to hell old CD to replace. Really though, they serve as nice additions to an already nigh on perfect album.
