...summer groovin'...
Mates of the Fun Lovin' Criminals, Cantaloop actually share a degree of seventies soul slickness and rap lite with the erstwhile coolest band in the world. But they're actually closer in spirit to daisy age rappers like De La Soul and PM dawn, with a breezy lilt to their world that is endearing and refreshing.
Of course, you might be thinking that this has all been done before back in the days of Acid Jazz, when the likes of Heliocentric World where making my life a little bit brighter, but how is it possible to have too much of something good? Go on, tell me. See, you can't.
Cantaloop tend to stick to an easy, mid tempo, loping groove, that just straddles the line between gently swaying and swinging in a hammock, gently jazzing you along. They know their way around a memorable melody, and once you're lulled into their vibe, they sneak through their left of centre world view observations, trying to catch you out when you're open to suggestion. There really ought to be a law.
I'm not entirely sure why their music isn't on constant rotation on every radio station in the land, because tracks like the title track and 'Propa' are just so damn good. Well, maybe I've just answered my own question. But if you're looking for something with user friendly hooks and beats, then this is the place to be.
Funkalicious!
I've been a fan of Cantaloop for a few years - and they are (in my humble opinion) an awesome band, deserving of much more recognition in the music world. I was therefore really looking forward to this album, and i'm not at all diappointed!
There's a couple of songs on this album from their 'Cantaloop - Live' album, so it's great to hear studio versions of these - including 'Propa', their ultimate crowd-raising live track. The new tracks are stunning mixes of funkalicious sounds, great lyrics, scratching and samples. The album's title track, 'I.C.H.I.L.E' is a piece of gloriously melodic funk, perfect for a sunny afternoon!
On this album there's songs to make you chill, dance, jump around and sing along to - and with an extra of some input from the Fun Lovin' Criminals - this album seems just about perfect. Can't recommend it highly enough!
So if you haven't bought it yet - what the heck are you waiting for?
