Synopsis
Children's cable network Nickelodeon fashions an American spin on Japanese anime with their original series AVATAR: THE LAST AIRBENDER. On a futuristic Earth torn between the warring elements of Air, Earth, Water, and Fire, only one special being known as the Avatar can bring peace to the conflicted planet. The trouble is, the Avatar is an immature 12-year-old boy named Aang, who would rather wander the world having fun-filled adventures than settle down and face his heroic destiny. Ably blending kids-oriented comedy with martial-arts action/adventure worthy of its Japanese counterparts, AVATAR continues with this fifth thrilling instalment.

Fire vs. Ice
This volume of the excellent Avatar series contains the final four episodes of the shows first season. Of the four episodes on this DVD the first is pretty much a stand alone episode that sees Aang and friends investigate reports of activity in the supposedly abandoned Northern Air Temple. What he finds there depresses and angers him but he is soon forced to put these thoughts aside in order to defend the temple from a fire nation attack. This is an okay episode and although it is really only a filler episode before the season finale, there are some suggestions of the future towards the end.
The other three episodes on this volume are really one extended story rather than distinct episodes in their own right. The first of these episodes sees the trio finally make it to the Northern Water Tribe but tribal tradition complicates Aangs search for a Water Bending master and Admiral Zhao gathers forces for an assault. This is a great episode that begins to show the strengths of Water Bending and the fight between Katara and Master Pakku is one of the best in the series so far.
The two part season finale itself is probably the best episode from the entire season and sees Admiral Zhao leading a massive Fire Nation armada against the Northern Water Tribe and enacting a plan that could mean disaster for the worlds Water Benders. These brilliant episodes see Aang travel to the spirit world as well as letting loose with the full force of his powers as the Avatar. The episodes are also quite touching in places especially between Sokka and Princess Yue.
Avatar is one of the best animated series from America for a long time with few bad episodes and managing to always be funny and entertaining. I will be greatly looking forward to the next season of this great series.
