Pure Genius
This one is most definitely a grower. After the brilliant Brainfreeze and Product Placement, Shadow and Chemist return with a much more diverse but equally boundary-challenging mix. It still retains the addictive quirkiness yet departs from the funk/soul only previous two to take a turn towards new horizons. This one has metal,hip-hop,funk, soul, rock, 80s synths, samba and country cut and seamlessly mixed together, intertwined with the trademark scratching and samples which we can only thank Shadow and Chemist's influences for respectively.
This is the extended version of the set and although I wished it had the amazing 'Charlene' track from the non encore version it represents the current tour version in that it features the 'too complicated to do during the first stages of the live Tour' bits and is therefore better overall. Recorded during rehearsals (and therefore no crowd noise) the cd is 80mins of awesome imagination that clearly demonstrates the duos ability as artists to constantly innovate and find those hidden gems that they somehow orchestrate together into a musical journey throughout many genres. They manage this using no less than eight turntables, an effects box, and two guitar loop pedals and using exclusively 45rpm records. Thats a whole 7" guys!
It takes a few listens to fully appreciate this one, but persevere, its a truly clever mix that I think I may have to buy on dvd just to appreciate more how talented and complementary the two of them really are. Buy it, you wont be disappointed. It up there with Coldcut's 'Journeys by DJ' mix- its a classic to appreciate for years to come.
How does he do it?
DJ Shadow and Cut Chemist have an uncanny ability to get this stuff just right. This CD is absolutely fantastic, I'm very happy with the purchase. I was a little disappointed by the Outsider's departure from his trip hop stylings, but this is right back on track. Worth every penny!!!
Another great mix
My version has a 42min and a 27min track. Would have rated it 5 stars, but the first 15mins are actually awfull. I mean really terrible, the choice of tunes are appalling. Especially the "Charlene" track which one reviewer said they missed on their version. That said, the rest of the tracks are actually awesome. Successfully mixing a great selection of soul/funk/electro/lo-fi garage/rap and it doesn't sound odd side by side due to skill with mixing.
The 2nd mix is harder and darker in my opinion. It starts with good skittering electro/rap and effortlessly mixes in a whole range of genres including garage and psychadelia. The only blip is the Foo Fighters track which seems to be crowbared in and doesn't quite fit/work.
Overall another great mix to stand alongside the brilliant Brainfreeze and Product Placement.
