CD Description
Recorded live in Japan, the TOKYO DAY TRIP EP finds guitar wizard Pat Metheny working with the supernova rhythm sectionof drummer Antonio Sanchez and bassist Christian McBride. There's plenty of stretching out and variety on the five tracks here. "Traveling Fast" speeds along with post-bop facility, "Inori" reveals Metheny's magic on acoustic guitar, and "Back Arm & Blackcharge" tackles rock-edged fusion. These recordings were previously available only as digital-only downloads and this CD release marks the first time that they've been brought together under one cover.

Wonderful Live EP
This wonderful little Live EP comes right on the back of the last Pat Metheny Trio album 'Day Trip'. The EP was cut in Tokyo and features Pat Metheny (guitars), Christian McBride (double bass) and Antonio Snachez (drums). There are five cuts on this EP, all of which are not on Day Trip. In fact, the pieces had been exclusively available for downloading on the Nonesuch Records website and, after fans had lobbied the company, now have their first appearance on CD.
These are not second-rate outakes --- this is top-notch stuff. After the triumph of Day Trip, the new Pat Metheny Trio seems to be hitting new artistic heights. Can't wait to see them live. The EP has everything fans love about Metheny. Explorations on the electric sitar-guitar, melodic post-bop, and a pretty acoustic ballad on the baritone guitar. The real highlight, however, is the fourth piece where Metheny and his fellow musicians let it rip with a noisy performance worthy of Hendrix's Voodoo Chile. Energetic! Recommended!
Great display of diversity
Released as a supplement to Day Trip, the trio's studio set from earlier this year, this is a collection of new live tracks recorded at The Blue Note in Tokyo. In spite of its categorization as an EP (a label that has probably lost all the meaning it had in the vinyl world - indeed, this set clocks in at 40 minutes, which used to be a respectable length for an LP) the keynote here is diversity, as this little group shows off a wide variety of styles, ranging from the folksy atmosphere of "Tromso" to the knotty polyrhythms of "Back Arm & Blackcharge".
In between there's "Travelling Fast", which is probably the piece that'd be most easily recognized as a Metheny tune, featuring as it does his characteristic creamy guitar tone. The breadth of the music on offer here transcends the limitations of a small ensemble, thanks to their careful attention to detail - for example, the delicate use of orchestral bells to highlight the melody in "Tromso" and the way in which the players shift and interlock on "Back Arm & Blackcharge". Two gentle acoustic ballads round out this set, making it a very worthy addition to Metheny's large catalogue.
Live is better than studio.
Not for the first time with a trio, Metheny finds more inspiration (and a warmer sound) onstage than he does with the same personnel in the studio. If you liked the studio album you will LOVE this live set. It is full of sparky, sinuous playing that really energises the listener. My personal preference is for the Pat Metheny Group and their more composed, structured pieces, but this EP is as lively and uplifting as the jazzier parts of, say, "Travels".
